Upgrading power supply

Upgrading power supply

2006-07-25 by sduck409

It's come to my attention that I need to upgrade my power supply. Upon hooking up my new
milton sequencer for the first time yesterday, I got all the lights on my various modules
coming on, but no sounds from my vcos. I disconnected a few modules, and everything that
was left worked, so apparently I'm right on the edge of what's workable with this system. I've
got about 20 modules hooked up now, all into a basic motm 900 power supply - there are
several blacet modules in the mix, they each draw more than your average motm module,
and the milton throws it all over the top. Anyway, I'm looking for a cheap/affordable
alternative to getting a 950, which I'll have to eventually get, but it's not on my immediate
needs list. Is there a way to add on to, or beef up the size of, the power one transformer
that's in the 900?

Sorry if this has been covered here before, and I'm pretty sure it has - I'll look in the archives,
but if anyone knows specific article names that'll help too.

There is no way to "beef up the size of, the power one transformer
that's in the 900?". That, and it's not a transformer. It's a power
supply. Although a transformer is part of such a power supply.

I don't know if another Power One power supply with more current will
fit behind an MOTM 900. Regardless, you have two options. You can
entirely replace the supply you have now with a bigger one that will
power everything. Or you can get another supply and use it to power
to some of your modules -- perhaps use the MOTM-900 to power your
MOTM modules, and the second supply to power your Milton and Blacet
modules.

What you do not want to do, is connect the the output of two separate
power supplies together.

I upgraded to the 1.5A version of the Power One supply in one of my
cabinets. This requires mounting the supply chassis separately from the
MOTM-900 panel.

Anyone who can afford a Milton can afford a monster power supply! ;-)

Uh, I built mine from a kit. Spent a total of about 50-100 bucks a
month on it for about a year. It's almost done - still missing some 45
knobs - another 60 bucks.

Although this gives me a good excuse to get a 950 power supply - then
that's one less obstacle to saving up for a 650, cloud generator,
etc...!

Hi

Off course money is always an issue but my advice is DONT
UNDERESTIMATE THE PSU. I´ve done a lot of DIY stuff so when I
started my modular setup with some MOTM filters I used an old
7815 / 7915 PSU (even though Paul S adviced me that it wasnt good
enough) and I had all sorts of hum problems. Not loud but enough to
influence sound in a bad way.
I finished my DIY cabinet in March and bought a PowerOne directly
from Farnell and mounted in the cabinet and the sound improvement
was BIG.

just my 2 cents

Gregory
