Ribbon/pressure controllers & construction ?

Ribbon/pressure controllers & construction ?

1999-12-03 by Tkacs, Ken

PAIA had a simple stylus-based ribbon controller on their old Gnome
synthesizer.

They also used to make a device called the "Veloci-Touch Controller" that
was a pressure-sensitive piezo element with circuitry to convert it to a
control voltage. The kit was designed to retrofit an existing keyboard to
offer after-touch by slipping the piezo wafer under the keyboard mounting
bracket, mounting the circuitry inside the keyboard, and drilling a hole in
the back for the extra CV out jack. Pressure on any key caused pressure on
the keyboard bracket, pinching the wafer. I imagine that the effect would be
uneven across the keyboard, but still it was a clever idea.

I actually bought one of these to retro-fit my Mono/Poly; however, I never
got around to building the kit and an old girlfriend, while cleaning up my
studio ("never do that!") lost, among other things, the bags of parts-they
opened up and were all over the place.

I probably still have the manual somewhere (probably the Gnome's, too) if
anyone's dying to know about it. I no longer have that girlfriend, but I
could probably get her number if anyone needs someone to really screw up
their work areas and lose vital things. She comes with her own pack of
problems and no guarantees, express or implied, from your s truly.

This sounds far to familiar! I hope her name isn't Anne.

I thought a bit more about this ribbon thing and it occurred to me it might
be possible (if a bit tedious) to wrap one's own wire wound resistor for the
resistive element. Just a thought.
