LFO synced to MIDI Beat Clock?

LFO synced to MIDI Beat Clock?

2006-03-01 by Wheaton, Simon

Is there anything available that has LFO outputs as CV that can be
synced to MIDI Beat Clock?

It would be nice to have something with multiple LFO outputs, all synced
to the one MIDI Beat Clock signal, with selectable waveforms/clock
division-multiple/lag/etc. per output.

Thanks,
Simon

Your best option for this may be built in LFOs in MIDI-CV converters such as
the Encore Expressionist or Kenton Pro-Solo. Analog modular LFOs typically
don't do this. You can semi-fake it with a pulse to the sync input to an
LFO, hard setting the LFO start cycle.

RE: [motm] LFO synced to MIDI Beat Clock?

I have a Kenton Pro 4 which does produce LFO's synced to MIDI clock.
However, it cannot divide the clock down far enough to be all that
useful, imho. What I want is to be able to sync LFO's that cycle
over several bars.

My Garfield Dr. Click can produce an LFO synced to a number of clock
sources (it doesn't have MIDI), but it doesn't work very well with
slow waveforms.

Most MIDI software sequencers, as well as one of the Lexicon boxes
(the MPX1, as far as I can remember) can produce synced MIDI LFO's
that can be run through a MIDI to CV converter. However, streaming
so much data at once can effect the timing of other events.

An MOTM-820 can be used to generate LFO's from a clock pulse, but it
has to be re-adjusted very carefully whenever the tempo changes.

While I do not think there is a way to design it using analogue, I would
love to see a digital module with an "analogue interface" that could
convert a clock pulse into an LFO. It could have several outputs for
different waveforms, a number of different clock divisions, and a
shape control similar to the MOTM-320. Afaik, no module manufacturer
offers such a useful product.

Thanks for the info.
That sounds like what I want in a module as well, but with direct MIDI input, without the need for an extra module to convert the MIDI beat clock to clock pulses. It would be a useful module for playing your modular from a MIDI sequencer. Maybe a seperate module to convert the MIDI beat clock into a clock pulse, with switchable divisions/multiples of the tempo, is there any modules that do this?
It would have to have enough resolution to avoid audible stepping in the LFO CV output.
Maybe I should post this to the synth-diy list to see if anyone there has any ideas?
Thanks,
