Do you mean actual vinyl LP-type records? Or CDs?

I'm not sure how inappropriate this post is, but I thought it's a good
group of people to ask.

I'm going to be going to a large used record shop and was wondering if
anyone had suggestions on some stuff to look for in terms of classic
synth records (regardless of genre).

Anything with Morton Subotnick tickles my fancy, especially the LP Touch. There is also a
current rerelease of the Silver Apples second LP entitled Contact available on LP.

I go to a local used record store (in Detroit area) and usually find
prog rock stuff - sometimes Gentle Giant or Camel records, which are
always worth the few bucks on the sticker, even if they are not awesome
records. Anything by Rick Wakeman on vinyl (not the latest stuff on CD
with no synths to speak of) would probly be good. There is at least one
Patrick Gleeson album that is only on vinyl - can't think of the title
now. I have a Patrick Gleeson record of Star Wars music (the original
film from 1977) which i suspect is not on CD either - it is very good,
whether you like the music of composer John Williams or not - a little
lexicon of synth sounds, like Tomita records. And of course Tomita
records are great too. Anything on vinyl by Jean Michel Jarre, if you
don't already have it, is worthwhile. My favorite Klaus Schulze records
are the old vinyl ones - i disike the latest, sample based stuff that i
have on CD. I have a Schulze double album titled "X" i believe, which
is great. "Sextant", by Herbie Hancock, although still in print on CD,
is an awesome album, which has Patrick Gleeson on it. The first Jan
Hammer records, also available on CD currently i believe, are good. I
have "The First Seven Days" on CD (a Jan Hammer record) which is awesome
- no one else sounds like him. These all reflect my tastes, of course,
YMMV...

FWIW, I would like to see other people's recommendations too - I usually
carry a list with me of stuff to look for and am always looking for cool
synth records to add to it.

Larry David

Some of the records have been rereleased on the occasion of their 35th
anniversary.
Any particular recordings you'd recommend since that's a lot?

e.g.
In a Glass House
Interview
Playing the Fool
Free Hand
...

Here's a few not yet mentioned (thinking of older pre-1980 stuff):

Mostly or all synth:
Tonto's Expanding Head Band (huge modular)
Stardrive (featuring Dave Mason, custom ARP setup)
Synergy (aka Larry Fast)
Gary Wright (Dream Weaver)
any earlier Tangerine Dream

any Yellow Magic Orchestra
Roger Powell (Cosmic Furnace, Air Pocket)

Bill Nelson (Diary of a Love That Whirls, Chimera)

Hot Butter (a bit goofy, but hey, classic)

Rock/ jazz groups from my formative years, with strong synth performances :
early Manfred Mann's Earth Band albums (1971-75 especially)
Edgar Winter Group (They Only Come Out at Night, Jasmine Nightdreams)
Johnny "Guitar" Watson (A Real Mother For Ya)
Isotope (The Best of Isotope)
Steve Hillage (L, Motivation Radio) (also the Gong-guy, Flying Teapot)
The Tubes (The Tubes, Remote Control)
Little Feat (Waiting for Columbus)
Utopia (RA)
Ultravox (Systems of Romance, Vienna)
Styx (The Grand Illusion)
Pink Floyd (DSOTM, Wish You Were Here)
Nektar (Recycled, w/Larry Fast)
Hawkwind (Levitation)
Yes (Yessongs, Rick Wakeman again)
Polyrock (Above the Fruited Plain)
any Talking Heads, Devo, Gary Numan, Depeche Mode, etc.

Mellotron:
King Crimson (Court of the Crimson King)
Moody Blues

As for Gentle Giant, 'Free Hand' and 'The Power and the Glory' are two of my
favorites, but you can't go wrong with any of their stuff.

Departure From The Northern Wasteland - Michael Hoenig
all synth, superb

Like A Duck To Water - Mother Mallards Portable Masterpiece Co.
all synth & organ, minimalism with a Mogg IIIc

Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come
deranged rock with lots of drum box, effects, and EMS synths

Body Love - Klaus Schulze

A Wizard, A True Star - Todd Rundgren

Todd Rundgren's Utopia - Utopia
first one with eyeball/pyramid cover; too many electronic devices to list.

Fripp & Eno - Evening Star
well really, all of the early Eno -Warm Jets, Tiger Mountain, Another Green World, & Before & After Science

I completely second those. He also supposedly made a third album
called Architecture, but I've never actually seen one or heard
anything from it. Been looking for years. Plus, while not an album,
I'd have to nominate both The Seven Rays and Mr. Triscuits from
Another Live for some incredible tear-em-up live synth playing.

and Roger is playing and recording electronic music again. He showed up at the Bay Area AH gathering two years ago with his MOTM and a Korg ER-1 as a sequencer for it. I spoke with him at length (comparing old BSEM-era war stories) and he was enthusiastic in his praise of MOTM. He also mentioned he enjoyed building the modules from kits.

I believe he is close to releasing an all new CD.

Both pop but analogue synth pop probably at its best:

Depeche Mode: Speak and Spell
Heaven 17: Penthouse and Pavement

I could say both records changed my life, but that dubious credit was
probably Jarre's Equinoxe.
