Front Panel Express engraving depth

Front Panel Express engraving depth

2006-01-04 by Richard Brewster

Looking at MOTM-102 panel ideas, I notice that a popular engraving tool
choice for lettering is the 0.4mm size. For over a year I have been
using the 0.2mm tool exclusively. For a reason I cannot explain, the
actual result of the 0.4mm tool became increasingly bold over time. So
much so that the last panels I made with it are a bit coarse looking.
The letter boldness of the most recent panels I made with the 0.2mm tool
is almost the same as the oldest ones that specified the 0.4mm. If you
are ordering from FPE in the United States, I suggest the lighter 0.2mm
tool. The result is more refined. The MOTM-like Font is DIN 1451,
1-stroke.

They're putting more paint into the engraving, which makes the font appear
thicker.

i agree completely - i have two oakley vcos sitting here, one with
the 0.2 and one with the 0.4. the difference is remarkable. i will be
using the 0.2 tool for all my future panelling.

Maybe true, but... I get lots of FPE panels made, and there is
*definitely* a variation in the thickness of the lettering. It's not
just a matter of paint. I use my previous files as templates, so
there's really no way to chalk it up (ha ha) to setting something
different. I thought for a while that it might only happen to me, but
the engraving on my new Wiard Borg 2 is way overblown compared to that
of my Boogie.

When they're able to pull off 0.4mm, it looks very good. Their
inconsistency has made me consider silkscreening all my panels instead : {
