UI Preference?

UI Preference?

2005-09-11 by Paul Schreiber

On the MOTM-650, there are INC/DEC pushbuttons on the panel, side-by-side.

Should it be

INC DEC

or

DEC INC

unless you are designing a product exclusively for the German market,
it should be

INC DEC

Look at your computer monitor. Most have a set of buttons. There is a
menu selector button and up/down buttons for contrast, etc. On mine the
down button is to the left of the up button, and the markings are:

v ^

Imagine a horizontal rocker switch. Likewise DEC<--->INC.

I'll disagree with that very, very strongly since it's inconsistent with
an overwhelming majority of user interfaces.

I live in the US, FWIW. Every device I own, and I mean *EVERY* device I
own from portable CD players, my car stereo, bedroom receiver's volume,
living room satellite receiver, cordless telephone, my first generation
iPod (advance track on the right, decrement track on the left), living
room DVD player, my Nord Modular, Roland JP-8000, Access Virus, Oberheim
Matrix 12, Yamaha 02r mixer, Yamaha RY-30 drum machine, Roland TD-10S drum
brain, the Kenton Pro 2000, the Dell 2405FPW LCD monitor, and Encore
Expressionist.

In fact, I can't even find a single device anywhere that's INC/DEC. Doing
it in an INC/DEC fashion would make the MOTM-650 a uniquely bad UI.

I have a Jomox Xbase 09 in front of me, the controls show but it works completly the opposite way, why? Because a lot of people were complainig and the guys from Jomox changed it in an OS update.

Wow. I would have never thought to look at my digital equipment - all
three pieces of it. You know Paul, the only way I can relate to this
is mechanically:

"Righty tight-y - lefty loose-y"

Chub - *not* the last word, ever...

DEC on the left, INC on the right, same as every other piece of gear I have.

well i still think inc/dec makes more sense, and charles (privately)
agrees with me.

that's presumably because i'm an englishman with dodgy handedness,
but i don't know what charles's excuse is.

Personally I think it should be INC / INC. We must go on! We must move forward! Set the controls for the heart of the Sun!

the motm logic on the knobs is left (counterclockwise) for negative and
right for positive, so keep the logic and use

DEC INC

Re: [motm] UI Preference?

What really should happen is a revision of the MOTM-650, the MOTM-653,
"Chaos Edition"

Inc and Dec will both simply be triggers that do a random 'brownian
motion' either inc or dec.
Also, lots of really noisy components should be installed so the thing
is really unstable and doesn't
provide a good solid voltage, even better for adding chaos. I mean, we
all like instability, right?

Actually, now that I think about it, you could just call it the MOTM-650
Millenium Edition...

+1 vote for -/+ or arrows.

Using the strings INC and DEC is just bad form. Does it mean incorporate &
december? include & decimate?

I was on vacation, I missed the fun :)
