The numbers are darn close for the slant cabinet. The outside width is
48.25" and the "inside" width (space for module face plates) is 46.75", for
26.71 U If I can squeeze another .5", it will be 27U!

As was pointed out, the rails are different. I was planning to order some
of Paul's rails and cut them to fit. The Moog rails are screwed into a
strip of wood "lip" just inside the box and there is enough room to allow
the short screws to set in.

I was hoping someone had the plans all drawn up so I wouldn't have to go
through the trouble but I'll see if I can make up a drawing of a Moog
"upper" cabinet and post it somewhere. Stay tuned...

I threw the attached drawings and PDF together just to show you good folks
the kind of cabinet system that I'm envisioning, and to see if the
forthcoming rails being discussed would work in a similar scheme.

We think pretty close alike. Attached is a picture I pasted together of a
similar arrangement that I was going to build. But mine goes 6 modules
across instead of 5 so they won't be too tall and skinny looking and more
effectively use the power supply. Also would be black tolex with metal
corners. (Excuse the Modcan cabinet to the right. I was seeing how they
would look and fit into the same size cabinet)

However my potential design might be swayed after seeing the cabinet design
on page 168, in the Feb 2000 issue of Keyboard magazine. I'm starting to
consider a cabinet shaped like that big Technosaurus system pictured there,
where the top also bends outwards.

Did you ever see the T.O.N.T.O. rig? That's the way to go.

Home Depot and Lowe's are pretty low on selection for hard woods, that's for
sure, but the one thing they do have going for them in the Red Oak is that
they have a bunch of pre-cut sizes that would require very little working.
For instance, they have ½" x 2" x 3' strips which you just need to cut to
size for braces (to mount the forthcoming module rails to) and 8" wide
planks that just need three or four cuts with the table saw at 45 degrees to
make the outside of the cabinet.

I'm trying to weigh the pros and cons. I want the best I can get, but
convenience is a factor since I will probably be adding cabinets every now
and then for the foreseeable future to house more modules, so I need to be
able to "stamp" these things out when I need them without too much trouble.

I've been watching a lot of "New Yankee Workshop" lately, and have been
toying with the idea of a hardwood cabinet that is totally fastened by
yellow glue. For the corners, I was thinking about buying a dovetailing jig
and doing those interlocking corners. I'm still trying to decide if that
will be really cool or goofy looking. It looks wonderful on furniture with
an "Americana" look... wondering how a synth cabinet would be.

It's either that or 45-degree miters to hide one of the edges. 45 miters are
easy to do, but not strong enough for gluing without biscuits or a
supporting block on the inside.

So buy a biscuit cutter instead of a dovetail machine, it looks 100% better.

Barry,

You can find the plans for my cabinet along with some pics in the egroups MOTM file
area.

Eric (patiently waiting for the flat rails to "finish off" his cabinets)
