Canada/shipping/duties (slightly OT).

Canada/shipping/duties (slightly OT).

2005-05-17 by bootlegsounds

Hi all,

This is my first post here, so .... hi. This is a question aimed at
the Canadian list members, so if that's a truly tiny minority, feel free to email me back
off-list.

I'm based in Montreal and was planning on picking up some modules (first some of the
filters/power supply/rails/etc, then later on some oscs/vcas/etc.). So probably $700/
800USD in one go, provided that can be done in terms of logistics on Paul's end.

Having never bought anything above, say, $100USD from the US I was wondering if you
guys had any conclusions regarding the amount of duties customs slaps on. Obviously the
fact the modules are US-made helps in regards to NAFTA, but what does that mean at the
end of the day in financial terms? I'm leaning towards kits, if that matters.

Shipping time is less of a concern, but I'd be curious to know that as well, if it's possible to
generalise.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Matthew

Count on about 20-25%.... if UPS ships it, count on about 30-35% total.

Cheapest method by far is USPS. When it comes into Canada , it’s a $5 brokerage charge, plus taxes & duties. UPS charges based on value, so brokerage on $1000 would be around $100 or even more plus taxes, duties, etc.

Everyone in Canada pay attention:

DON’T SHIP EXPENSIVE ITEM INTO CANADA VIA UPS. …

As a new MOTM dude from Canada and a reasonably experienced eBayer I
have this to emphasize just in case Paul didn't get the message across:
DO NOT USE UPS TO SHIP TO CANADA!!!!!!!

The reason is this: the brokerage fee they charge is HUGE compared to
what you will pay via USPS. USPS packages will wind up at your local
Canadian PO and you will get a card in the mail. You then go down to the
PO and pay the PST and GST and a $5 CDN Canada Post handling fee.

Incidentally if you are a Canadian buyer using Digi-Key to purchase odds
'n sods they have a catalogue you can get in Canadian dollars and the
prices include customs and brokerage fees and they ship Purolator. Very
convenient! Does Mouser have a similar set up?

I third this: DO NOT USE UPS TO SHIP TO CANADA!!!!!!! Use USPS if you can.

Digikey is the best place to buy from (in
Canada), because you'll get your order in less
than 48 hours (usually 24) and only pay $8 in
shipping. Mouser does not have such a nice system
in place, but I still order from them.

Don't use FedEx either. Last time I checked, they were charging a flat US$50 brokerage fee on top of the GST & PST. One time they hit us w/ a $200 customs charge, by assessing $150 in GST & PST on a $199 item. This was because they taxed the insured value, which covered a pcb which had originated in Canada, was shipped to the US for repair/modification, and was thus exempt from the tax. Idiots.

We've been shipping Europa upgrades to Canada via USPS for a few years w/ no problems.
