walnut wing cabinets with magic buss

2005-05-14 by J. Larry Hendry

While I have been getting no synth related work done at all, my cabinet
maker has been hard at work putting together my personal cabinets that will
add to my existing 4 row x 24U set up many of you have already seen. After
making and shipping more than 20 cabinets to others, I finally got him back
on track to make my cabinets. I have been out of space for a long time. My
original cabinet maker quit after he made the first 3.

The concept for my cabinets came from my desire to combine the slant front
look of the Moog cabinets with the wrap around functionality of the Roland
System 700 wing cabinets. My other desire was to make a percentage of my
modular space set up for mounting on the 19" rails so that I can mix and
match MOTM modules into the same cabinet with my 19" rack gear that will
also reside in that cabinet. That will include my Kenton MIDI2CV, a PAiA
vocoder, and s few other select items.

The bottom cabinet is set up for the magic buss just like my center
cabinets. The top cabinets are simply a 12U high x 19" rack size. These
cabinet nest up to my main cabinets so there is no gap between. The
inverted near triangle space in the corners will have a metal panel that
will house joysticks and push buttons and perhaps a theremin-like antenna
for generating CV controls.

In a couple of weeks I get to pick these up and bring them how for
finishing. The bottom space holds 2 rows of 8U wide each. The top cabinet
holds of course up to 2 rack rails sets. So, these cabinets add 72 U of
space for MOTM modules and 4 19" rack U tall. It is my plan to stop at 168U
(96+72). However, the astute will notice that since these cabinets have a
45 degree angle, that I could double this exact setup and end up with a
horseshoe console. capable of holding 240U. (96+72+72)

Larry,

this is gonna look great, in fact they already do right now!

I\ufffdm definitely looking forward to see the finished setup!

All the best, :-) Michael. (errm - greetz from Valencia this time ;-)

Looks great, but why stop there? Double it to 480U and make a
complete surround-synth. Course, you'll need a means to lower
yourself inside (flowing cape and all) so you can play it.

Don't you think that might be considered just a tad excessive? Or, is
compulsive a better word? I don't have a "problem." But, you might. I can
stop any time. Really. I can.

I think so. But, more importantly, I think it will be very ergonomic and
functional. I think I will be able to reach every thing from the standing
point in front of the keyboard.

Well, you can count on a series of web photos. I'll find time some day.

I'm not going to be impressed with any erognomics until you can use an MOTM
*lying down* in bed, possibly with the modular suspended from the
ceiling. Now
*that's* ergonomic. Really...

I'm not quite that far along. However, I just finished a keyboard
project that gives me a nice 90 degree wrap-around. Not in the
photo is the 13 note pedal board. This along with the vocorder
and double keyboards requires a lot of coordination ...

Keyboard controller

2005-05-15 by J. Larry Hendry

I saw this. What a great find to be able to work into a nice controller.
It looks great. And, I really like the description of the pedals and how
they work. I am struggling to learn to play pedals on my A-100 at church.
I have always been a left had bass kind of guy. But, one really cannot
claim to be an organ player until he includes the pedals. I'm afraid I may
not have the coordination for two hands and a left foot.

Best,
Larry

Re: Keyboard controller

I just wrote a quick midi translator for my PSIM that takes the
keyboard and bass pedal data stream and transposes it based on
the setting of the pitch bend wheel.

If the pitch bend goes negative, it sets the mode to normal.
If the pitch bend goes positive, it reverses the keyboard (e.g.
lows become highs and highs become lows).

It's pretty simple but some of the sounds are pretty interesting.
Since I play by 'feel' and not sound, I can still play a number
of songs but they come out completely different but in tune with
itself. Oh, the fun of a Sunday with spare time and a couple of
midi processors ...

As for the feet, I just program up the keys to play a preset
pattern. One of the modes is a 'one shot' where a tap on the key
will play a single sequence of notes. I'm finding that with the
keys reversed, I'm getting nice little fill ins.
