The dot com QCS44 Tilted Walnut Studio Cabinet - space question

The dot com QCS44 Tilted Walnut Studio Cabinet - space question

2005-03-29 by Richard Brewster

I already have three of the dot com QCS22 walnut cabinets, converted for
MOTM with Stooge flat rails. Now I am considering converting one of the
big dot com slant cabinets, the QCS44. Looking at the pictures,
http://www.synthesizers.com/cabinets.html, I am wondering about the
module space. Modules are angled downwards. I'm concerned about depth,
because I have a lot of deep modules, mostly on Stooge brackets. These
go back almost 8 inches. Angled downward, I don't see how a module
deeper than a couple of inches is going to work in the bottom row. This
is giving me second thoughts about the QCS44. What do you all think?
Anybody out there ever converted one of these for MOTM?

Thanks,

-Richard Brewster

Yeah, but the pcbs don't start at the bottom of the module, do they?
Most of my long stooge bracket modules have the bracket at least 3
inches from the bottom of the module - that would allow a lot of tilt
before it hits.

Take some modules out of their cabinets and just lean them back on the
tabletop. That will tell you what angle you can stand.

Good advice Moe. Interestingly enough, you may find that the jacks on the
bottom of the panel may be more of a concern. I have never had a dot com
slant cabinet in my possession. However, I can tell you that on the Stooge
cabinets I sell, the cabinet maker has to make special provisions by cutting
a slot for the jacks on the bottom row. I'm not sure if the jack location
on Roger's cabinets causes his to make any similar prevision.

Here is a photo on my website that shows how that provision is cut in my
cabinet kits.

The top of whatever wood rail the dot com cabinet has for screwing the
modules into the bottom row must have either:
1. The same angle back as the cabinet front or
2. Some slot similar to the one in my cabinet kits.

Larry (who put in 14 hours on the day gig today).

The DotCom has a similar cut, although it looks to be a bit shallower. But
the one MOTM module I own (490) fits fine in the lower portion with JUST
ENOUGH room for the jacks and wires. It looks like there's enough clearance,
from the board pictures I've seen on your site, so that that any "official"
MOTM module would fit.

The 490 mounts on a Stooge products 3 pot short bracket. Many MOTM products
have a bracket that is just as deep, but is 1.625 inches taller. Since the
top placement is the same for both, the 1.625 inches is in the downward
direction. To determine if the 3 pot long bracket will fit, extend an
imaginary line straight back from the bottom of the bracket 2.75" and see if
that hits the bottom of the dot com cabinet.

Thanks for all the responses. I'm confident now that many of my modules
will fit into the lower part of the case.

I figure I could squeeze another 2 1/4" (a slightly innacurate and
conservative measurement) in the downward direction. So MOTM should
fit just fine.

Oh, no, there's plenty of room for that bracket. Your 4 pot "long" one
looks like it would would fit too.
