MOTM review and demo

2005-02-22 by Jeff Laity

I got my first batch of MOTM modules soldered together and passing
audio this weekend. I have a bare minimum system so far, with one 300
VCO, one 490 "Moog" VCF, one 190 VCA and two 800 envelopes. I was able
to patch together a few bass, lead, string and FM sounds with this
setup. The FM was done by putting the VCF into self-oscillation and
modulating the 300 VCO.

Here's a picture of my system so far:

The first thing that grabbed me about the sound of the MOTM was the
bass. I thought I had some synths with bass before (Super Jupiter,
Andromeda, CZ-101) but this system makes them all sound like frozen
Atkins dinners. The whole system sounds very big and authoritative. And
this is with just one oscillator! I've always built synth tones
starting with two oscillators, but when one sounds this good you don't
always need it. Of course, I can't wait to get a few more VCOs and
filters for some real fun.

Here's my first demo using the system. All of the sounds are from the
MOTM modular except for the drum loops (Stylus) and synth pad starting
from bar 3 (Andromeda). It's kinda lame fusion/funk stuff, but I was
just messing around to see what the system is capable of.

Looks like you're off to a good start. Of course, you need some Synth Tech
logo cables to dress that out. :-)

Jeff, if you think the 490 has nice bass (and it does), wait till you get a
440 - it's jaw dropping.

(notice that I assume you will be getting one.. this is the natural
progression of the disease :)

Hey Jeff -

This is a very nice demo! I love the "loping along" rhythm and the
synth sounds GOOD...

Great littel demo!!

I was wondering if the opening attack sound was coming from the MOTM.
It sounds like an electric bass pluck.

Yes, three tracks of MOTM. The bass hit is panned center, just a simple
1 VCO-VCF-VCA patch. There might have been some resonance, I can't
remember. There are also two tracks of sweeping FM, panned left and
right.
