PSIM-1

2005-02-02 by Terry

I'm sure there are many members of this list who have ordered the
PSIM-1 module, or have considered ordering one.

Next month will mark one year since I ordered the PSIM-1 module from
Brice Hornback, including payment through PayPal. Shortly thereafter
I was told that there were about a dozen people ahead of me, and that
it wouldn't be long before I would receive my order. When that didn't
happen, I asked Brice on several occasions to estimate delivery time
for my module. The last time I heard from him, I was told that he had
already begun my module and that delivery would be the end of October
if not sooner. I have been told that Brice posted a message on his
discussion list (I am not a member) that a more realistic date would
be the end of December - which also did not happen, and no word since.

I am using this forum because I have been told that Brice has blocked
critical messages from his own discussion list. I am asking members
of this list to reply if they know of anyone who has received a
module from Brice in the last few months. I am not contacting Brice
directly because I have had it with the empty promises, excuses,
and "thanks for being patient!" replies to my inquiries.

Thanks for the bandwidth,
~Terry

That's apparently not the case -- Larry Hendry posted a "WTF?" message
yesterday, and there was a "Me too!" reply today. Alas, no response yet from
Brice.

Let's suppose that you get a refund; the sad thing about that is that
someone else will probably take your place in the queue.

The PSIM is a unique, awesome module. Be sure that you don't cut off your
nose to spite your face. (After all, you've waited this long...)

But *also* suppose deep in the MOTM R&D labs, a super PSIM is brewing....heh
heh.....ARM7...heh...heh...250,000 gate Xilinx array with USB
controller...heh...heh....18bit ADC/DACs....heh...heh.......

You know - we hate it when you do that. :)

Just how deep is the real question?

This is clearly speculation though. We're just saying. Because Paul has
learned his lesson about pre-announcing projects... ;)

Why bother with the ARM7? It would be simpler just to get the Virtex II
FPGA with a couple of PowerPCs in it. :-)

Actually, that project sounds a lot like the MOTM "Titan" project.

Having worked with many ARM7 cores and a handful of PowerPC cores, "simple" and
"Virtex II" don't go together. ;-)

Yeah! Way to go Paul!

But why an ARM7 rather than an ARM10 or 11? I would have thought if
you're going to be doing DSP, then floating point is kind of nice to have!

(Not that I care, really - the ARM is hands down the nicest machine
I've ever written assembler for. And fixed-point DSP is fast as f**k
'cos it gives you those free barrel-shifts to bring fixed-point
numbers back into scale after a multiply).

So what's the FPGA for? Just for handling USB?

Either way, a couple of inputs, a couple of outputs, four knobs and a
2x16 LCD screen and I'll buy at least two of these!

I forgot to ask: how much memory will this thing have (both RAM and
EPROM/flash/whatever)?
