OT: In defense of a fellow member

OT: In defense of a fellow member

2005-01-24 by J. Larry Hendry

This is OT, so I will keep it short. But, these two lists are the most
civil and full of the some of the best people I know.

Today, I received a personal attack out of the blue from someone claiming
that I not only stole the high voltage arc video linked from my website (and
graciously hosted by Old Crow) but further asserted I stole the description
(which are my original words).

Many of you are my customers for quality cables, synth panels, and other
mechanical parts in support of the synth DIY community. Those of you who
know me, may well remember when I originally posted this video, and
overloaded my web traffic allowance (sorry Cary). And, those who are my
customers understand my business ethics. I do not "steal" anything.

So, if you feel so compelled, you may write to this fellow and tell him the
truth.

Here is the original e-mail I received today:

As always, thanks for the bandwidth and to the many friends I have made here
over the years.

Nice job on stealing the video and description from someone else's website
and not even providing proper credit and making it look like you got the
video personally from some friend of yours.

Pretty sad if you ask me.

I like the way he didn't bother to include a link to the "original" site.
So I did a quick Google check and found lots of links (dated a year ago) to
Larry's original. I quit looking after the first page.

This is the great thing about the Internet--it's so easy to just fire off a
nastygram without putting any thought into it or double-checking anything.

Thanks to all who took a moment to write Mr. McCauley and to those private
notes of support mostly telling me to ignore him. I did hear back from him
in an entirely different tone. Hopefully it was because he thought better
of his rude note as opposed to being concerned that I posted his not
publicly on my web page with the video.

I appreciate the friends I have here but think it is time to quit imposing
on the public bandwidth of these good lists.
Thanks
