Pay dirt !! My 480s arrived. YES !! In fact, I found time to complete
one of the PCBs. :-) I used the water clean solder for all of the parts
normally used except for the transistors. Then, I did my last board wash
prior to putting on all the parts where I used no-clean (the usual
suspects). Last to go on mine were the tempcos and transistors since heat
compound was involved.
I did my transistors slightly different. I cut about a 3/8" length of
heatshrink. I put my transistors face to face with a little heat goop, and
then put heat shrink around (and heated) the combination to hold them
tightly together. Then, I soldered the "six-legged" device onto the PCB. I
know my pairs are heat bonded. Now, maybe I have taken some of the cooling
away from the transistors. But, I am betting it is not enough to matter.
So, right or wrong, that's my $.02.

Subject: [motm] 480 kit question
I was wondering about the pre stuffed board. The instructions says to use
no-clean solder after all the resistors are soldered in. But that means
using no-clean on a lot of parts that normally get organic solder like caps
and the power connector.
Any special reason why the change?
