19hp rails - what size bolts

2005-01-12 by Julian

Ive aqquired second hand, somewhere along the line, some of the 19hp drilled rails form mounting motm modules.

Ive tried once to buy bolts for them, and got the wrong ones. The thread is described as "#8-32", but it seems i need more
information to get it right.

Ideally i was going to order a set of bolts when i mail order from rapidelectronics.co.uk at the end of the week, but im unsure if
ill get them right.

Any coments?

Cheers, Julian

The bolts that come with MOTM modules are #8-32. These are the bolts
for mounting a module to a 19hp rail. These same bolts are used to
attach MOTM modules to Stooge flat rails. The bolts that are for
attaching regular rack mount gear are #10-32. These bolts would be
used to attach the 19hp rails to the 19" wide rack. That's the
standard for north american made racks.

Julian, check out the RS website. They stock most of the US size screws
there.

http://rswww.com/

Rapid have only old British and metric sizes.

Alternatively, your local computer shop will have some too since most
PCs are built with US size screws.

hello all,
from what i remember the 8-32 bolts are almost impossible to get in the UK,
if you need a lot, maybe you could try Stooge Larry - i think he has to buy
them in bulk for the flat rails he sells (cue: Larry ?) all MOTM modules
come with 4 x 8-32 screws, second hand - some people just forget
if you're really stuck i could probably spare a few - what do you need..?
in Eurospeak, the best bolts for attaching the 19A rails to a rack cabinet
are M5 as the usual standard M6 are just too thick for most rails (don't
forget you'll need M5 caged nuts as well unless you're plugging into an SKB
rack)

ah - i never thought of that..
meanwhile, my cunning new cabinet plan has backfired - i now need more power
supplies (grrr)
Tony do you have any good tips for Power One or similar supplies in the UK
..?

cheers

This is where I get mine if I want a bare bones supply:

http://www.xpplc.com/index.taf

But more information on my Power Supplies page:

http://www.oakleysound.com/power.htm

As you can see I tend to recommend you get the MOTM or Blacet ones!

Power supply 110/220

...just thinking and hoping to say no nonsense. Motm 900 is supposed
to deliver 800 mA but, is it still delivering the same current when
wired for 220V? or it drops to 400mA? I know this is a simple
question almost for everyone here but not for me. Many thanks.

Yes, it still delivers 800 mA DC to your modules. It just draws less
current from the AC mains at 220V (as opposed to 110V).

No, the *output* current is still 800ma, but the *input current* is 400ma.

Because, as we learn in EE school on day #1: "Power is power."

Gee, when I went to EE school, I was first taught to resist. After learning
that resistance is futile, I tried to gain the capacitance to learn.
Eventually, I was inducted and Laplace transformed myself until I had the
power!

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. ;-)

So, if the input current at 110V is 800ma and the output current is
800ma, then it shouldn't get warm, right? <ducking> (Flunked out of EE
school)

First day in Thermo class: "Heat does NOT EQUAL temperature."

This is sort of a hard concept to grasp, like knowing the difference between
intentionally killing someone and deliberately killing someone (legally, they
are *quite* different).

In our case, the heat dissipated is the same.

unfortunately you can only order online if you have a VAT number, but you
can call them on 0118 984 5515
the LN 1.5A supply is currently out of stock...
