Magnetics?

Magnetics?

2005-01-07 by Jim Carlile

Is it a bad idea to have my MOTM and power supply in very close
proximity to speaker magnets (monitors resting on top of the
modular's wooden case)?

I'm interested in this matter to. I'm considering placing my cabinet
about 15 cm away from my monitors...?
And how about an ancient & HUGE (approx 3" deep, 21") computer screen?
(15 cm's from other side of cabinet)

I can safely say that sticking a computer monitor near audio gear is
usually a Bad Idea. CRTs are giant RF transmitters. Even the
RFemissions from the guts (and cabling to) an LCD *can* generate noise,
but to a much much lower level. Keep your CRT out of the studio! As
for the speakers? Not as much of an issue IN MY OPINION but you aer
talking audio-frequency-range signals getting pushed through a coil, so
there's probably a potential for interference.

Personally, I've had more problems with my GSM cell phone than I've
ever had with a CRT. That thing will make noise over any nearby
speaker.

i once had a GSM phone print to all 24 tracks of a multitrack machine in
record ready mode
EM shields were up and the nearest phone was at least 5m away !!!
now my imac at work tells me my phones about to ring about 5 seconds before
it actually does
