OT: Dot com forum dies

2004-09-13 by J. Larry Hendry

Did anyone else notice the explosion in dot com land lately? A few with
little respect for others pretty much ruined the list. And, some of the
trouble makers were not even system owners. I see that Roger has now closed
the forum. What a shame. And, just when Stooge products was about to open
up the panel market seriously into dot com land.

The closing reminded me of a couple of things:

1. Having a name like "synthesizers.com" attracted a lot of people that had
nothing to do with modular since "synthesizers" is a pretty broad general
interest subject.

2. This list, like the wonderful Synth DIY list has been basically flameless
for many years. I express my appreciation to all of you for that. Some may
argue about MOTM being the best modular. But, no one can argue that Paul,
and a couple of Stooges) have the best customers. :-)

I must strongly agree with Stooge Larry's thought #2. This list is really
amazing and a great group of people. For the most part everyone here is
very respectful - and surprisingly modest. I have watched conversations
and even casually dabbled in a few only to find out that the persons that
I am communicating with have many many years of experience in modular
synths, or electronics, or music (or high voltage design! <bfg>) and often
do this type of work for a living. What an great resource - thank you. I
have learned a tremendous amount thanks to all of you - and without being
made to feel like a fool (unlike some other lists). It will be a *very*
sad day indeed should this list ever close down.

I hope to make it to one of those MOTM get-togethers someday. I'm in
Danbury, CT. Do we have enough around here to do a NorthEast one?

Cheers,
George

(Well kept secret: Larry's really not a stooge.)

I had a small MOTM system at AHNE 2004 in April. A few photos are at:
http://www.alt-mode.com/AHNE2004/
http://www.oldtech.com/synth/AHNE.html
[There are more but I'm too lazy to look up the URLs right now...]

If there is interest, I could possibly organize another for sometime in
November or we'll wait until next April.

I am probably the bad boy on here. With 2 or 3 exceptions of non-owners since the inception of
the list, I am as about as bad as it gets. Ha!

I am not modest at all. I tell it like it is. I suck at electronics. And I am only mediocre at
synthesis. I still love all of it though!

I definitely agree that this list has been one of the most amazing sources of information about
MOTM and synths in general I have ever come across. I am continuely greatful that such
knowledgable and helpful people continually choose to share so much. Thanks!!!

Cheers!

P.S. Not Stooge Industries affiliated; Larry likes to point this out occassionally especially
when I have been acting up. Although I am pretty sure I am one of their top 5 customers. Paul is
still #1 I am sure. Their cables are GREAT, but unfortunately I have not had the financial
opportunity to purchase any yet. I can't wait to though!

Hi All,

I haven't posted here too much, but I've been lurking for a couple
of years, and I read this list every day.

My name is Dana Countryman, and I am a recent refugee from
the island of synthesizers.com! Yes, Roger shut his newsgroup
down, which I think is a bit extreme, but whatever.
He still makes a great synth, and I have one sitting right behind
me.

But hey! I have MOTM modules in there, too! Paul also makes a
great synth, and my setup has turned into a hybrid of both. So far,
I have 4 MOTM modules, and plan to get more.

As much as I like the s.com, and as professional as Roger has
been with me, I still have to say that Paul also has GREAT
service. He's called me several time on his dime, to check with
me before he's filled my order, which I think is amazing.

Plus, I've had a couple of long conversations about synths and
family life, etc. Paul, I've enjoyed our brief talks, and appreciate
the effort you've put into the MOTM work you do!

Here's my setup:
http://www.danacountryman.com/Studio9_1_04.jpg

See if you can identify the MOTM modules....

Well, I hope to be more active on this list, as I care a lot about
modular analog synthesis, and I'm currently half-way through
work on my first synth album. More info at:
http://www.danacountryman.com/MOOG-CD/MOOG-Tastic.html

And hey, I have 3 Stooge panels in the works (c'mon Mr.
Postman) for some custom mods I'm working on.

So "hi" and I hope I'm welcome here.

Cheers,

 -Dana Countryman

A new list is now open to those who wish to take up where the old dot com
list left off. While I rarely posted to the dot com list (since I do not
currently own any of it), I did read all the posts except the threads that
started down the flaming trail.
Anyhow, a completely open list is now available at
dotcomformat@yahoogroups.com
With a few good members like Dana and Rich (hint, hint) maybe the list can
get a fresh start with a more respectful tone.

Dana is being a bit modest. A lot of the material on the album is inspired by Jean Jaque Perrey.

The album is titled "Love Sick Martian Boy." 2 tracks are available for download: the title track
and "Cocktails in Space." I love it! Check it out at:

Man! You nailed it.
And yes, that's the Dark Star in the MOTM format. What an eye.
Good work!

Wanna take a stab at what's in the bottom right corner of the
modular?

Thanks, Shemp. Yes, the album is very Jean Jacques-inspired,
and in fact, I recorded a tune with him in Paris last summer, and
we're currently co-writing two new tunes together!

Thanks for the compliment and mp3 plugs....

Best,

 - Dana

Actually, that's my vintage Ace Tone Rhythm Ace drum machine,
one of the first analog drum machines. All-transistor, baby!
