Need Mac/DVD help

I am thinking of putting QuickTime MOTM synth tutorials on CD. However, I am seeing "strange" things when trying to use an*external* DVD/CD burner on my G4 notebook (w/latest Panther). And I've tried *2* different external USB/FW drives (Plextor and TDK) with the exact same results. On *either* FW or USB, the OS only 'partially sees' these drives. There is no icon on the desktop (it does see the ext. HD in the FW chain). When you look at the System Info, the drive is "there" BUT.....under the 'Disc Burning' item it has 'Not Supported'!!! What the $$#$!!?? How can a DVD/CD RW drive NOT have 'Disc Burning' supported (or am I so old and stupid I'm missing something here?) So, DVD Studio Pro doesn't 'see' it at all, even though if you put a DVD in there is *plays fine*. If you use Toast, it 'sees' it fine (I can burn from Toast but need DVD Studio for the menus). iDVD does NOT see it, either. Is this a Panther thing? What am I doing wrong? Why doesn't the OS at least 'mount' the drive on the Desktop? It mounts a FLASH keydrive, a USB mouse, a USB floppy and the FireWire HD. I hate computers. Paul S.
