480 demos

480 demos

2004-08-25 by Mike Marsh

Hi All -

I pointed some folks to www.synthtech.com/demo because I thought
there were a couple of my 480 demos up there. Nope, my bad. I
posted two here in the files section. These are a bit weirder than
what's on the syhthtech site.

I *really* like the 480. It's a big, hulking, intimidating filter
until you spend some time with it. Then it becomes a very good
friend. The fact that there's two filters in there makes for some
really cool stereo possibilities as I hope these demos show. Also,
the tone is not as tame as some people have implied. Yes, it's not
a nasty 485, but it does spit it's own venom when angered.

Hi Mike,

now we're talking! ;-)

I've two 485 on order, the 480 might complement them?

Do you care to elaborate the patches?

Thanks a lot, Michael.

Hi Michael -

I think that it would be great to have both filters in a rig. They
do compliment each other in a certain way - they both have a
Yamaha 'sound' but the 485 can be a lot rougher sounding. I would
get two 485s for max versatility.

About the patches: it was a while ago and I don't keep notes, so the
exact particulars are, um, lost to history. But basically I used
the two sides of the filter independently with a VCO & modulation
feeding one side and a different set feeding the other. The VCOs
shared a CV source, tying the patch together. As I recall the
patches were pretty standard VCO-VCF-VCA stuff with some modulation
of the VCF via EGs and LFOs thrown in.
