the last yard

Hey, as I wait for my first box o'modules to show up I thought I'd toss
out a question: what's your connection from your MOTM to the rest of
your gear?

Looking at the Oakley site, he says of his OMS-410 "410 Helper" module
"The three audio outputs of the MOTM-410 are combined to produce an
outstanding stereo output. These outputs are especially designed to
drive long cables and can be tailored to produced ordinary line levels
for direct connection a to a mixer."

That got me wondering what everyone else was using. Specifically, what
module do you patch out of (VCA? something else?) and what do you connect
into (preamp? mixing board? A/D?)

Thanks for any insights here...

I have four cables into my mixing board dedicated to my modular.
Sometimes these will patch into the output of a VCA, sometimes
they'll be patched to the output of a filter, or to the output of a
frequency shifter. Sometimes I'll have to run a few extra cables from
the modular to the mixer if the patch has more than four distinct
sounds that I want to record on separate tracks.

Some time ago, there was talk from texas about an output module, but
that seems a bit superfluous if you have a mixing board.

This is pretty much my setup, too. Very flexible. I tweak the
input trim of the mixer as needed...

I have an 8 channel bus made out of 2.5m of unbalanced multicore going
from a patchbay to a 1U panel on my modular. This has proven invaluable
for several reasons:

• no more cables (hm, fewer..) pulled across the studio from the
modular to my patchbay.

• the routing is flexible I can get to/from mixer/modular *real* quick.
i.e. take a send from the console patch it to the bus, patch out of the
bus to a filter etc. back into the bus and then into a channel on the
mixer.

• as I have a few monosynths perched on/around my modular I use this
bus as their I/O as well. Makes for easier integration of
monosynth-modular fun.

• I start to think of my modular as a real extension to my mix
environment rather than an extra device. I've even started using
patches as inserts on channels.

I suppose these things are obvious to most folks but they were a
quantum leap for my productivity and modular use.

An output module would still be a nice option. I typically don't track
through my board, but rather through a preamp/limiter/A->D pathway.

A module similar to the 940 Patch Panel with 1/4 inputs tied to
DC filtered/buffered instrument and line level outs would rock.

Paul mentioned to me that he had something on the back burner similar to
Blacet's Input Processor as well. Having both on hand would seem to make
cross-patching with other instruments and recording a breeze.

(I'm sure the DIY contingent makes these things for themselves already,
but for the rest of us...)

I'm driving a Carver PM-600 amp so I build an output module
specifically for it. I always want a foot pedal volume so I used one
of the Charlie Lamm / EDN VCA pcb's with separate gain and cv inputs
for left and right followed by an attenuator and capacitive coupling.

The module provides remote power control so the amp powers up with
the MOTM. This way I can drive mono or stereo with foot volume from
my MOTM-850.

I also designed and built tape output modules that convert the
signals to -10 dB levels with input, output, mix, and feedback
controls to interface to my Otari 4 track. I can use these signals
if I need line levels. This allows me to either record or have analog
delays for each of the four channels. Both of these designs are on
the ModularSynthPanels group under the 'DJB designs' folder.
