Small MOTM system - last two modules - thoughts?

Small MOTM system - last two modules - thoughts?

2004-07-14 by ivancu@aol.com

I already have the following:

MOTM-101 Noise/S&H
MOTM-110 Ring Modulator/VCA
MOTM-120 Sub-Octave Multiplexer
MOTM-300 VCO (X2)
MOTM-320 LFO
MOTM-420 VCF
MOTM-440 VC Lowpass Filter
MOTM-800 Envelope Generator (X2)

I have space for two more single-width modules, or one double-width, in this particular rack. I'm sure I'll get another rack in the future but for now I want to fill this one. Originally I was thinking of getting a MOTM-890 micro Mixer and MOTM-910 mult, and a few people here agreed. However, I think I have enough mixing capability with my two filters (am I wrong? comments are welcome!).

The MOTM-910 mult seems to make sense. Since I have the older MOTM-110 ring mod/VCA should I perhaps get a MOTM-190 micro VCA?

Thanks to all who respond, and thanks again to Paul for providing us with the greatest modular synth available (in my humble opinion).

Ivan

Hello Ivan,
How about adding a MOTM-490 and MOTM-390? The 490 is quite different
sounding than the 420 and 440, and is very nice. With the 390 you get two more LFOs,
with the added bonus of extra two blinky lights. ;-)

Well, now that you have posted your full system, I would instead opt for
the 410 filter. This is one sweet module - can you say "stereo bandpass
filter sweeps"?

With that setup and only 1U left, I would add one of the following depending
on your preference:

310 uVCO - more complex single patch voices
390 uLFO - more modulation sources with 2 LFOs
490 uVCF - Moog flavor Filtering, if this is a priority, can also open this
wide for simple mixing of 420/440 into VCA.
800 ADSR - 3rd envelope, use on synced VCO, for instance, or VC LFO shape,
or second VCF

On the 890 UMixer - I agree you don't have much need for CV mixing in this
setup as the VCFs/VCOs have it built in. Mixing is still useful for
paralleling your 420 and 440 filters into the VCA. In your current setup a
series connection is the only option unless you use the 120 for filter
mixing. But you could use the 490 with frequency wide open for audio
mixing, and it is only $40 more.

The 110 is a dual VCA or VCA/RM, so the 190 would not add as much as the
other options, IMHO.

By the way, I am assuming you need the mult for ganging together 1V/oct CVs
for VCOs/VCFs and gates for envelopes.

Yes! The 490 would make a great mixer substitute, as well as being a
sine wave VCO and a great VCF. You have a nice set of modules there,
two of most. What do you not have two of? LFOs! If 'twere my choice,
I would fill out this rack with a 390 and a 490 and figure out other
ways to multiple up the patch cords.

Re: [motm] Small MOTM system - last two modules - thoughts?

2004-07-14 by J. Larry Hendry

Although there are many ways to fill those last two slots, and I have seen a
lot of good suggestions, Richards comment below makes a lot of sense in
terms of not wasting a spot with a mult. The MOTM-320 has a lot of blank
panel space. In fact, it has enough blank panel space to support three of
four 4x mults. Just buy a dozen jacks or so and get your drill out.

You may be able to find several 320 front panels available out there if you
want to keep the original for some reason. Several people have modified
their 320s to include complementary outputs, which does include panel
replacement.
