I use three of the Rane SM82 so I have 24 STEREO inputs in three rack spaces! Excellent product sonically, and nicely built. A rare feature of the SM82 is a true stereo aux send.

For those who want only the best, and have the money, this is the ticket:

These sometimes show up used on eBay. VERY nice.

I've seen older Speck mixers go for $700 on eBay, so it is worth keeping an eye out for one.

Another cool mixer for ProTools setups is the Rane SM26B, since you can have a direct out from each input:

I have one of these that gets inputs from my three SM82 mixers and allows me to have a stereo submix while passing three stereo "stem" mixes to my DAW.

I used to have a SM26... sold it long ago, also on eScary... I think I got $50.00 for it... I am currently using a Presonus Digimax96 LT for 8 addtional inputs... the cool part is that it is lightpiped into ProTool DIGI002, so I actually have 16 in, and it is "selectable" in the software as an ADAT channel. Very clean that way... plus I can sync the clock rate as well
I was inpressed with the mass amount of inputs from the Speck, 76 inputs... !!! that's impressive. and then 8-bus grouping out... you could have your sampler with all 8 out have a separate channel, and then routed for each of the group busses, and for recording purposes, all 8 in of the Digi 002. A one shot setup for say 8 drum tracks, for those of us who mix kick, snare, hat, tom, tom, tom, overheads, etc etc... on channels 1-8 in the mix... then without unplugging anything, just a twist of the volume pots, and a shift of the Faders.... tracks 9-16 can be enabled, and volume up a different set of synth sources, and away you go... thanks for the heads up on that, I may have to watch eScay for one of those...

The Speck's actually do come up for auction on Ebay
from time to time. I missed one owned by Babyface,
sold for less than $1500. I own a couple of Speck
ASC's and they are incredible. The older version has
unbalanced outputs, so you have to watch. Vince (owner
Speck) is a lot like Paul... just a nice guy to do
business with.
