MOTM-420 (MS-20) filter demo.

MOTM-420 (MS-20) filter demo.

2004-01-28 by Robert van der Kamp

Here's a nice demo of my new MOTM-420 filter. The Korg has
two of these in series (HP -> LP), but I currently only
have one (second one coming).

This demo has three parts:
1. The clean OSC sound (just a few secs).
2. The 420 in LP mode (around half of the demo).
3. The 420 in HP mode (rest of demo).

During the demo I only tweak the filter, if I remember
correctly. I added a nice delay on the sound in my mixer.

The ultimate kick of course is to use heavy resonance and
freq modulation on both the HP and LP filters, each at
different frequencies, or at the same frequency for a power
boost.

In the second part of the demo, where you hear the 420 in HP
mode, you hear the high frequencies of the sound coming
through. To get rid of that part of the sound, you need
that second LP filter. I tried that with one of my other
24dB LP filters, but they make the sound too creamy. You
really need the 12dB MS-20 sound to remove the high content
and still have that byte in the sound.

Of course the mp3 format kills a lot of the deep analog
content, but it's fun anyway.

Enjoy!

This is indeed a very nice demo! I love the 420, and this demo shows
it at its best, me thinks. FOr a supposedly 'sharp' filter, it does
have some nice bounce, eh?

I can tell you that I was *really* surprised when I tried
the 420 for the first time. It is much deeper, flexible and
much more impressive than I had expected from the sorta
mellow reactions from this list. It *can* be sharp, but as
the demo shows, it can also be very deep. The LP/NF/HP
switch, together with the mix features and the great reso
sound makes this a top quality tool for many kinds of
music. It's my number one filter now. :)

Can't wait to try it with #2 in series. I'll post a demo of
the twins asap.
