Help with RR discograply

2004-01-03 by mate_stubb

I have the following Robert Rich CDs available to me as a Christmas
present - which should I choose (based on electronic content)?

Below Zero
Temple of the Invisible
Humidity (3 discs!)
Inner Landscapes
Outpost (w/ Ian Boddy)

Thanks for the recommendations!

Moe

This is dark, moody, lots of "eerie" stuff.

ZERO analog synth content.

quiet, droney stuff.

> Inner Landscapes

Very early stuff, not my favorite

Now you're talking! About 60% MOTM. Still, a quiet, brooding set that
reminds me of a movie soundtrack.

Now, if you don't have the following, you NEED these!

Numena: the Prophet 5 in Just Intonation. Still my favorite CD.
Stalker: the CD that created "dark ambient". Very scary/moody/creepy
Gaudi/Propagation: a lot of fans consider these 2 as his "best works".

However, if you like his music played more as a background to another sonic
element, then I suggest:

Yearning: RR and a raga slide guitar (not a sitar, but sort of close). Next
to Numena, my #1 soldering music
Fissures: the RR CD where he perfected his lap steel guitar technique.

Lastly: please buy directly at www.robertrich.com so he maximizes his
profits.

As far as electronic content, I would suggest Outpost (though I am further
biased because I am an Ian Boddy fan). As suggested, the context is
about an outpost on a distant planet. The music is not "70's sci-fi",
but more semi-minimalist electronics with percussive electronic
realizations throughout (though not exclusively). A very well-done album
(again, my opinion).

The rest of the albums that you mentioned are either not electronic or
IMHO not at the 'top' of Robert's creations. You may also want to check
out Propogation. Lots of acoustic percussive and wind instruments, but
lots of electronic synth stuff also. The latter is one of my favorites,
as is Beastiary.

Hope this helps a bit, Jeff

And lots of Pluggo.

Yes, an excellent CD. I'd sure have a hard time picking a favorite from his
discography, though.
