The most basic patch

The most basic patch

2003-11-03 by Chris Walcott

Hey everyone,

Well, after a year and a half, my studio is about to have it's grand opening. In this time I've been busy building kits and for the first time I have everything put together in a rack <http://abstracks.com/temp/motm_voyager.JPG>. Pictured is my MOTM rack, a Moog Voyager, a VX-351 and a FutureRetro 777 (on top of the rack).

My MOTM rack has 2 190's, 2 800's, a 310, 2 LFO's and 2 filters.

So, now that I have it together, I'm trying to set up a basic patch. I want to make a simple bass or lead patch and I'm having trouble figuring out what goes where.

I want to use the voyager to trigger the MOTM. Out of the VX-351 I have CV pitch, gate, trigger and velocity. So far all I've been able to do is get the key down (note on) to change the pitch but I can't seem to figure out how to make the gate work so that when I let up on a key, the note stops.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

- chris

a) The basic audio path is VCO >> VCF >> VCA.

b) the VCA is what turns notes off and on *when* controlled by an EG. The +OUT of the EG goes
into the CV IN of the VCA.

c) the GATE output of the Voyager goes into the GATE IN of the MOTM-800 EG.

d) from the same EG, take the -OUT signal and patch it into the FM IN of the VCF.

This should get you rolling.

Feed the 310 into a filter, the filter into the 190. The
190's output goes into your mixer.
Make sure one of the 800 EGs controls the 190.

Now feed the Moog's CV into the 310, and the Moog's gate
signal into the 800 that controls the VCA.

That should do it.

Can you plug a gate output directly into a CV In of the VCA for a
simple organ style envelope? I only ask because I don't have a VCA
to try it out on yet.

Hi,
You can, but it might cause audible clicks during key on/off. It's
best to use an EG to control a VCA, but if you're short on modules
it's always fun to try things to see how it works out. :-)
