swag ???

swag ???

2003-08-09 by Markk W. Roberts

In British thieves' slang swag was 'a thief's plunder or booty; a quantity
of goods unlawfully acquired'. The term appears in Grose's 1811 Dictionary
of the Vulgar Tongue, where one of the definitions is 'any quantity of
goods'. James Hardy Vaux, who was a convict in Australia, includes the term
in the slang dictionary compiled in 1812 and published in his Memoirs in
1819: 'The Swag is a term used in speaking of any booty you have lately
obtained'.

It also means "Someone's/Scientific Wild Assed Guess". ;-)

If I had obtained booty, would I be typing to you now?!

Anyway, thanks for the reference. Now that I think of it,
doesn't "Waltzing Mathilda" begin
"Once a jolly swagman...."?

Then again, I have a swag lamp, but it isn't stolen. Odd.

Heh. And now that Paul's away....

BUY DOTCOM!!!

Webster's 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language:

SWAG, To sink down by its weight, to lean.
SAGBELLIED, Having a prominent overhanging belly.
SWAGGY, Sinking, hanging or leaning by its weight.

This might indicate the reference to both the lamp and the verse in
"Waltzing Mathilda".

In the music and pro-audio industries "Swag" means "stuff we all give/get" as in promotional items such as t-shirts, etc. After a while you end up with drawers of black t-shirts with every logo imaginable. Lots of pens too.

But I wear my Synthesis Technology hat; thanks Paul!

This swag tangent's starting to get a little old, but...

Swag & shwag are words that sound similar, but mean the opposite.

Swag is booty or loot - something valuable, like a prototype MOTM module.

Shwag is junk; you hear people refer to the free stuff they get a
trade shows as shwag. It used to be a term for bad marijuana, too.

If you watch Letterman, you might remember Manny the stoner. He would
give Letterman his opinions on current events. Everything was either
"shwag", which meant it was bad, or "dank", which meant it was good!
