OT: Convincing Strumming

OT: Convincing Strumming

2003-05-02 by Tkacs, Ken

Does anyone know of a currently available device for creating convincing "strumming"?

Years ago, Oberheim made a device called the "Strummer" that would take as MIDI input chord triads from a keyboard; it would then re-voice them for proper guitar voicings and then strum them, outputting the altered MIDI.

Later, Ilio offered a really cool thing made by Charlie Labs in Italy called the "Digitar" that was a short bracket sporting six strings and a MIDI output. You would voice your chords on a keyboard or whatever, then go back over them in your sequencer strumming these strings. They were solely for triggering the sounds.

Both of these units are long out of production. Is anyone out there doing/using anything convincing besides just rolling chords on the keyboard...?

Steinburg has one: http://www.us.steinberg.net/Products/VG.htm. Or
you could get a Roland pickup/MIDI converter (Yamaha makes one,
too). Also, my favorite is the Ztar: http://www.starr-labs.com.

You can do strumming via midi and a delay algorithm. Depending on
your hardware/software (I've got Sonar) you can enter in chords sorta
like that strummer thing you mentioned, then on playback, have the
midi note numbers/turn-ons slightly delayed starting from the root
up, or top down. In sonar there is a CAL programmer utility which
allows you to custome write code to do this action upon execution.
Easier still, you can download a ton of prewritten CALs 'scripts' off
their site, etc.

Just one option to mention...hope it helps.
