Christmas in April...

Christmas in April...

2003-04-09 by Markk :-)

ahhhh, what a great day it is... I rec'd my cables today !!! :-) and along side that box was another one... it contained a pair of Encore Electronic Event Generators... ahhh what bliss... now I will be getting a couple of shipments from Paul in the next few weeks or so... it's like Christmas all month... !!!
Small quiz for all that "build" their own modules... do you own an oscilloscope ?? Paul has been recommending ones for me, (thanks for the help Paul :-)) but man... kind of expensive... although, I did find a B&K Precision 100mhz, brand new on sale for $899.00 down from $1599.00, seems like a good buy... Paul recommends no less than 50mhz for a "good" scope...
also a 60mhz version, for $789.00 down from $1099.00
pretty obvious which one has the better savings... $700.00 off of the 100mhz !
a 2190b If it seems like a great investment that will last me 20 years, I will just get it instead of the Tek 2235 that is 15 years old...
;
ok, everyone bombard me with opinions... thanks

I'm not sure there's a reason to buy a new oscilliscope for analog synth work. Get a used on off eBay-- you'll save a grand! (New oscilliscopes are overkill, anyway.)

A used dual trace, 50 MHz scope is plenty. B&K and Leader are decent
brands for analog audio work. HP is a step up. You do want dual
trace, however.

Dual trace? Does that mean it will show up to two waveforms?

Yes, with two trace leads. To differentiate between the two, you can adjust a Y-axis-offset, so one shows on the upper half, and the other on the lower half. Or just let them run all over each other. :)

Hi Markk.

I have an old 100Mhz Tek 7603 mainframe scope I picked up at Hoss Traders (a
HAM "festival") last year. It was like 10x cheaper than that new B&K, and
about 80x cheaper that it sold for back in the early 80s! What's also cool is
all of the different modules you can find for it on evilbay (although you can
never be sure what you're getting on there). The only downside is that it's a
workbench hog. Oh, and it's not very mobile. But it sure works nice and looks
the part.

Man, I wish I had some spare $$$ for some of those Encore UEGs (or a MOTM uSeq
for that matter!).

Cheers,
George

The scope I use is a Tek 465b off of e*bay for $200. Dual trace, 200mhz,
works great. I don't subscribe to the "20 mhz is enough" idea. Audio
circuits have been known to oscillate at RF frequencies. How can you see
it if you don't have a 100mhz or better scope? My $.02
