Sunday night demo time

2003-03-31 by Paul Schreiber

Small, simple demo of the upcoming MOTM-600 uSequencer playing in "PPG Ratchet Mode". This is
what the Wolfgang Palm PPG Sequencer for Tangerine Dream could do: programmable dual/triple/quad
'ratchets' per note, but keeping on the beat. Single MOTM-300 VCO>>MOTM-440 VCF>>MOTM-190 VCA.

BTW: will have more demos in about 10 days. The firmware is about 85% done, and I'll show some of
the 19 different real-time CV modulation routings (feeding slow sawtooth into SeqLength while
modulating Transpose is pretty fun).

Very cool little diddy Paul. I like that "stuttering" effect alot.
Can't wait to hear more soundbites of this thing in action!!!

[Q] Bench PSU

2003-04-10 by Tentochi

Paul suggests having a bench power supply. But all of the supplies I
have seen are usually 12V. How does this apply to our standard 15V
modules?

Thanks!

I use a *variable*, triple output Leader LPS-152. I think there is a smaller wattage (cheaper!)
LPS-151. These are TANKS, have like 100uv of ripple. Highly recommended.

I recently bought a piece O' crap PSU for my bench -- I wish I'd asked first! My favorite section of the (barely) 8 page manual (8.5" X 3" page size, with only three pages of text instructions):

! 3.CAUTION:
3.1 This power has perfect current limit protection. When the output is short-circuit, output current should be limit to the maximum spot and will not increase. But the power still loses. The power should be put off immediately and the breakdown should be fixed to make the machine work orderly when short-circuit or overload is happened.

I also like the bit about using a thick conductive wire, "to prevent the unit from inner destroying."

So where might one find a Leader PSU at a "reasonable price"?

I didn't know Roland made variable power supplies.

I bought a beautiful bench PSU on eBay similar to this one:

VERY nice for less than a new cheapy unit.

2 new demos of the MOTM-190 VCA/RM. These demo the CS-80 style Ring Mod (variable Blending) and
Exponential response of the VCA. This give extreme percussive sounds.

The Ring Mod is something I usually overlook when synthesizing.
Mostly because I don't get too many sounds from experimenting that I
like. After listening to these clips I can't wait to dig into my
190's when I get them. I was wondering if the maker of these clips
could post some general signal flow used to get the intersting
timbres in the percdemo. I really enjoyed that one.

Re: Sunday night demo time

2003-04-14 by Mike Marsh

The RM you get out of the 190 is really sweet, especially if you use
the 'purer' sine waves from self-oscillating filters. Combining RM
with other elements can really create some lovely textures!

Here's the patch info. Note that ALL of the timbres in the demos
that Paul has posted use this patch. Basically I wanted to combine
VCO-based voices with an RM voice and put that through the
exponential part of the 190:

VCO Voices
* OUT of a 310 (full PULSE) into FM1 of a 300. Linear FM at about 1.5.
* OUT of another 310 (full PULSE) into FM1 of another 300. Linear FM
at about 1.5.
* All four VCOs have their 1V/OCT fed by my Kenton Pro Solo
* SAW OUTs of 300s into IN1 and IN2 of a 490.

RM Voice
* 420 in self-oscillation feeds IN1 of 190.
* 440 in self-oscillation feeds CV1 of 190.
* BLEND of 190 somewhere above 5.
* OUT1 of 190 feeds IN3 of 490.
* Both filters have their 1V/OCT fed by my Kenton Pro Solo.

* 800 + feeds the 490 FM

Exponential Out
* OUT of 490 feeds IN2 of 190
* 800 + feeds CV2 of 190
* 190 L/E switch set to E, CV at 10, GAIN at 0
* 190 OUT2 to the console for recording

The tuning of the 420 and 440 make a difference in timbre, as does
the amount of BLEND. So does the tuning of the 310s and the FM1
amount of the 300s. THE ADSR values for for the 800 feeding the 190
are pretty critical: set them so that you get snappy response without
clicks. The 800 to the 490 is less critical, but does make a
difference. Finally, the GAIN on th 190 can be fun to play with,
too, once you have the envelope just right!

Sunday night demo time

Here is a long (5MB) demo of 6 MOTM modular percussive/bass/noise patches running in parallel,
each output going into a mixer channel. The patches are faded in/out in real-time manually, so I
guess it's a form of playing "modular DJ" (no overdubs). Thanks to Mike Marsh for this.

I believe the correct term is "Gear J". Nice bit of kerplunking there, Mike.

Gear J!  Good one.

And thanks, BTW.

Now I need to figure out how to vary the timings a little on the
beats and such. All this talk of a gate delay is what inspired me to
do this piece...

You could try Moe's trick building a gate delay from an 800 & 700,
or use an 820. Basically all you need is a ramp generator and a comparator.

Re: Sunday night demo time

I'll give that a try, I'd forgotten about those posts...

First demos of the MOTM-480 CS-80 style VCF.

http://www.synthtech.com/demo/darkside_motm.mp3

This is all MOTM, with all sounds made with the '480 filter. It's actually several snippets
spliced together, some on Left and others on Right. The '480 is really 2 filters, so in some
patches the BP Out is on 1 side while the LP Out is panned to the other. No external processing
used.

Does a pretty good VCS3 sound :)
