MOTM Inverters?

MOTM Inverters?

2003-03-06 by Mike Fisher

Hi all,

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on where I might look to find a
multi-inverter unit? Ideally it would be a single panel with, say, 2-4
voltage inverters, in MOTM format. Control of gain and/or offset for
each inverter would be useful. But to my knowledge there is no such
thing currently offered anywhere. The functionality of the Synth.com
Q125 is about the closest thing I've seen to what I'm describing, but
I'd rather have more inverters in a single panel and I'd rather have it
in MOTM format. Am I just missing something that already exists in
terms of an off-the-shelf solution?

Mike,

If you mean digital logic inverters, there is nothing currently
available. If you mean analog inverters, I use the Oakley Multimix in
a Stooge panel that is set up for either 3 reversible attenuators or
a 3 input mixer. See here:

Compact and cheap!

Another option is the Blacet MX2040 along with one of our MOTM converter
panels.

You can even add 1/4" jacks to the panel.

Ships in one working day. Use it and then sell it when "something
better" comes along from Paul...:>

I agree. This is one of the last few holes in the
basic MOTM line-up. I have done a fair amount of
research of what should be included. Here are some of
the basic needs IMO:

* Full-Wave Rectification
* Half-Wave Rectification
* Variable DC Offset
* Inversion++ (at least 2 inverters on module)
* Attenuation/Gain (at least 2)

++ The invertor should have a variable center point.
There could be a 3-position switch with a selectable
center point--0V, +2.5V and +5V. Or this could have a
variable center point.

This in combination with a Boolean logic module and
the envelope follower/detector will make an awesome
punch! Paul has all of the groundwork done for the
Boolean logic module as far as I know. And I think
the features we are asking for here are pretty
straight forward.

One of the workhorse jobs for this module would be to
convert CV signal between various standards.

Paul....? (And my mixers are busy mixing.)

All of these functions should be available for both
audio and CV.

One module that provides an inverter, among other features, is my DIY
Mixer-Comparator project:

I have two of these and they always seem to find their way into patches,
often for the inverting function.

I forgot to point out that each mixer-comparator module actually has two
inverters that can be used independently. The output of the mixer is
already inverted. If you switch the inverter to the comparator, you can
separately invert a pulse going into the comparator input. (The original
positive pulse phase will also be available at the comparator output.)

An electrical standard I've adopted for my synthesizer is that all pulse
outputs are roughly +/-5V (rather than 0 to +xV) so that these waveforms can
be inverted when being used for control purposes. (If you invert a 0 to
+10V signal around ground, it never goes positive and won't work as a gate.)
Being able to invert a pulse come in handy, since certain actions take place
on different edges. For example the MOTM-800 EG gate input uses a rising
edge and a positive gate, but the trigger input triggers on a falling edge.
Sometimes I want to trigger the 800 in sync with some other event being
gated off a positive signal. An external pulse inverter does the trick.
