On another mail list, someone was complaining that Hancock didn't do
anything this year to deserve his grammy, I suggested that they were
just getting around to awarding it for Sextant.

EM records

2003-03-02 by Larry David

Thanks to everybody who chimed in on this thread. This gives me a lot
of new records to track down.

FWIW, I'm more into jazz fusion than prog rock - though I like a lot of
ELP, I love early Corea (Return to Forever's "Romantic Warrior" is one
of my all time favorites. Did this group record anything else?) and
Weather Report. (I play bass too, so I'm biased toward any group with
Jaco in it.) I've never heard a more musical Minimoog player than Chick
Corea - he plays the wheels like a virtuoso. The best Mini soloing I've
heard is on "Romantic Warrior" - or possibly the dueling Mini/trumpet
solo on Maynard Ferguson's "Maynard" album (the Chesire Cat Walk track,
I think; originally from "Primal Scream"). The Chick Corea combo of
Rhodes and Mini is about as sweet as it gets for me - with Chuck
Mangione's Rhodes and flugelhorn a close second (also due to "trumpet
player bias".) When I just want a wash of glorious timbre (though not
without some structure/rhythm) I go for Jarre or TD or more lately JH's
Dark November CD. This kind of stuff seems harder to find and I'm
hoping that some of the records people listed will fit the bill...

Joyous listening,
Larry D.
