Diode Waveform Shaper demo

Diode Waveform Shaper demo

2003-02-20 by John Loffink

Here's a link to my web site with construction notes and a demo of the
Patchell/Microtonal Synthesis Diode Waveform Shaper panel. The mp3
shows this being used as a complex timbre modulator. I have not seen a
module like this in any modular system, past or present, even though
diode wave shapers date back to the analog computer days, from which
modular synthesizers were derived.

Those are some nice sounds, John - now where's the image of that sexy
Stooge panel? ;>)

Hello everyone,
I haven't had a chance to explore this module fully (I built mine this
week), but so far I'm very impressed. It can be used as a waveform animator,
or as a CV modifier like that of an Oberheim tracking generator.

Feature-wise, it's more complex than the Oberheim T.G.. There's more
adjustability for each stage in that you specify your own breakpoints, and
gain for each BP can be set pos or neg. There are modulation inputs and outs
for each breakpoint stage as well.

The module allows for a wide range of control over the input. So much that
I'm buying another MOTM mixer and quad LFO to help with it all. :)

A new link for the Diode Waveform Shaper files:

I have added some photos of the construction and completed module as
well as mp3s of some amazing vocal realizations by Andrew Sanchez.
