FW: [motm] Cable buyers read - droop issue / price issue
2003-02-19 by Tkacs, Ken
My opinions on the matter: The droopiness is not likely to be a deal-breaker for me either way. I've used cheap droopy cables and I've used stiffer ones. I don't have a preference either way; I seem to make due. Neither is the transparency/opacity of the cables. I do think that the transparent cables look sexy. But I could live with either. So I guess I'm basically voting to go along with the majority on these issues, leave the decision to the more passionate or well-informed of us. As for the Synth Tech logo, it would be nice to know what the color of this is prior to specifying the heatshrink. If it's silver, I'd get all black heatshrink. Speaking as someone who daily wrestles with a company that has a long, oblong-style logo, I think it makes a lot of sense to stack "Synth..." on top of "Tech..." and put the scope icon alongside, to get the logo as "compact" as possible. If you make it one long line, you have to make it tiny, and I don't think that's even advisable for a graphic design standpoint---keep the words together and support them with a flanking graphic.

-----Original Message----- From: J. Larry Hendry [mailto:jlarryh@...] OK cable buyers, I have been listening to your comments. Some of you have expressed concern over droop. And, I have a revised and better price quote from another vendor. These two are related. So, read on please. DROOP ISSUE I will post photos tonight showing the droop of the new cable, and have some comparison photos with other cables so you can see for yourself. However, please be aware, that any cable that is like what I hear everyone asking for (braided high coverage shield and 20 gauge center conductor) is not going to have much droop. If we want LOTs of droop, we have to go with spiral shield and smaller center conductor. PRICE ISSUE: I have another quote for making our cables from a vendor that did not want to lose our business to Rapco. I bring this up in the same mail with the droop issue, because I believe that cable will have a little more droop to it. The reason is that vendor is proposing a Belden 90% spiral shield cable with 20 gauge conductor. I believe that cable will have slightly more droop. But, I don't look for it to be a lot more. Nothing like the small diameter Hosa cables some of use have been getting buy with. probably more like a Kavacy cable for those of you that have some of those. I have a sample coming. I'll add it to the droop photos when it gets here. The price is 10% lower. However, the cable is not translucent. We still get a nice selection of colors from this vendor. This wire comes in black, red, blue, purple, green, orange, yellow, white, and gray. The shrink colors are red, purple, gray, green, orange, brown, black, and blue. So, look at your cable order. You tell me if you want to give up the translucent look for a 10% overall savings. I'll let you know about the droop when the sample arrives. We can push the order back a little to make decisions and change things if needed. But, I loose some of my buying clout if I have to go to 2 vendors. Personally, I have no problem with spiral shield. However, 10% on the price is not that big a deal to me either. So, just one more thing to think about. :) You tell me. Larry
