Official Synth tech cable order time

2003-02-18 by J. Larry Hendry

I am pleased to announce that high quality, custom made, Synthesis
Technology logo cables are now available for order. I am now a dealer for
these products and am pleased to bring them to you at very reasonable Stooge
pricing. All of the information about the cable color choice, connectors,
construction, and price is available here:
http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/cable/cable.htm

You can also download Excel or PDF versions of the order form. I want to
place this large bulk order on March 1st. So, please let me hear from you
right away. I will not have a firm delivery date until I place the order,
but I expect to be shipping cables only 2 weeks after placing the order.

I'm sorry if you get this twice. I am sending to the MOTM list and BCC to
anyone that e-mailed me that they wanted cables. Any note you have sent me
expressing interest was most certainly appreciated. Knowing how many cables
I was shopping for gave us great buying power. However, that e-mail does not
constitute an order. I now need your specific orders and with all details.

Stooge Larry

P.S. Next, I will get the cabinet kit page up.

Belden Cable

2003-02-21 by lotek

Is belden 8762 (68$ for 500ft) or 8451 (44$ for 500ft) sufficient for
making cables? Which is better? Are there better options?

a new (rabid) MOTM fan site

2003-02-23 by Scott Juskiw

Since 80% of my life revolves around MOTM in one manner or another,
it seems only fitting that I devote 80% of my meager webspace
allotment to my MOTM addiction. Cruise on over to:

www.tellun.com/motm

where you'll find lots of photos and sounds of my synth, explicit
details about every modification I've made to the modules, and a
sneak preview of my own (limited edition) DIY modules.

Thanks to Stooge Larry for beta testing my site (the cheque's in the
mail Larry). Thanks to Larry and Moe for providing their own
brilliant MOTM fan sites.

And of course, thanks to Paul S. for starting the whole MOTM craze in
the first place. It's gonna be even bigger than the hoola hoop.

WOW! What a well-organized, laid-out site. Lots of effort went into this!

BTW: EVERY MOTM OWNER NEEDS SCOTT'S CD!!! His "self-running' patches (no MIDI, no keyboards) are
jaw-dropping. When you get "stuck" coming up with a new patch, this CD has dozen of new sounds.
Get it, listen to it, and start patching in a new direction.

Crow's take on the triple reversing mixer

2003-02-23 by The Old Crow

At the behest of Robert Rich, I built a triple reversing+bias module to
his specifications. Each stage provides -/+ 5V bias in the absence of a
jacked input, and as each output is used, it is removed from being summed
with the next stage. All stages have a gain of -2 to +2. Thus you have a
3-to-1 mixer, or a gain stage with bias, etc. Formulaically:

  2.500V
     |
  IN_A * (-2 to +2) = OUT_A
                          |
  2.500V |
     | |
  IN_B * (-2 to +2) + OUT_A = OUT_B
                                  |
  2.500V /------/
     | |
  IN_C * (-2 to +2) + OUT_B = OUT_C

The dashed lines indicate the normalling jack switches for bias
reference and the section cascading.

With thanks to Stooge Larry, I even have a nice panel for the
prototypes:

http://www.oldcrows.net/~oldcrow/synth/crow/3xrevmix_ft.jpg
http://www.oldcrows.net/~oldcrow/synth/crow/3xrevmix_bk.jpg

Looking around the web afterward, I noticed that Stooge Moe almost built
the same thing. This one is a bit different, though. And is also quite
different from an Oakley Multimix.

I was pondering making a run of PC boards, and selling those along with
three 250K type 149 pots for those interested. (I got this stash of 149s
from a former workplace and decided to do something with them, thus this
1U module. ;)

Another VC EG update

2003-02-23 by The Old Crow

I'm finally into making hardware for this EG. I decided that the best
method of control of each parameter was to provide a dual-concentric knob
set for each. Front knob is 'initial' value, rear knob is reversing input
control of the external CV input. This way, things like assigning a rate
'direction' and gain to applied CVs is is easy as it gets.

I am putting two bicolor LEDs on: the cycle state LED and the
oft-requested variable-brightness LED that follows the module output.

  And thanks to Larry (again):

http://www.oldcrows.net/~oldcrow/synth/motm/m880pnl.jpg

(I need to drill the 2nd LED's location, but this is the panel I'm
working with for the 880 project).

And for those curious as to where I'm getting dual-concentric pots: 1) I
have several friends in Japan 2) Akihabara is a really cool place for
(literally) spelunking for parts.

This is a great site. Thanks for sharing it Scott.

The cabinets look magnificent. I'm sure many of us are likewise
"horizontally" space challenged.

The ability to move each cabinet yourself is any important one. That
was a factor when I built my 18U wide by 15U tall MOTM cabinet. I
calculated this was the maximum size that I could move myself, about
80-90 pounds fully loaded.

The model number implies that this is a future MOTM module. If so this
is very interesting. A VC EG would give dynamic articulations to sound
parameters. Some of this can be done with a UEG or VC Lag processor,
but this module looks optimized for the task. Good luck on your
project.

Re: [motm] Crow's take on the triple reversing mixer

2003-02-24 by Scott Juskiw

I hacked my Oakley multimixers so that they can act as a bias source.
It definately is a great thing to have around. I like your idea of
using 2.500V with a gain of +/- 2 (rather than unity gain). Hmmm, I
may have to hack my multimixers again.

This just keeps getting better and better. What about dual-concentric
knobs? Are these available in the standard MOTM/Alco format that we
all know and love?

Well, the front knob is easy as it is just a PKES70 instead of a PKES90.
The rear knob is the one I'm trying to figure out at the moment. Since it
is not as visible (the top being covered by the front knob) the actual
type of knob is less of a problem. It has to be black and have a similar
shape to a PKES, and fit the lower shaft of the pot. I've seen several
knobs that are good candidates for this.
