Rail distance

Rail distance

1999-10-11 by Paul Schreiber

Trying to salvage my dress panels here at 1:30AM.....sigh......

Everyone with a tape measure: please verify that the distance,
center-to-center,
between holes in a 19" rack is 18 1/4". I'm 99% sure this is correct
<<<NOW>>
and that would indicate to me the source of error and probable Barlow scrap
heap.

I might get the machine shop to mill a slot where the hole would be and
touch-up the paint,
cheaper than the $397 I would have to donate to Barlow (and other Stooges).

What I think I did is put the hole 0.275" from the edge of the dress panel
instead of 0.375".
Probably couldn't read my own writing. Good thing I spent all that time in
EE grad school.

I measure 18-3/8" from center-to-center. That is 18.375". I measured it
on racks from two different vendors and got the same number. Hope this
helps, but it doesn't sound like the answer you wanted.

My experience has been that this number varies significantly from rack to
rack. Hence the "slots" in rack gear as opposed to holes. I measured
several of mine and find them to be around 18 3/8". However, I have one as
wide as 18 1/2" (Happens to be my MOTM rack). I did not have anything as
close as 18 1/4."
