Tony suggested I try AutoTrax - I downloaded and installed it, but
had no idea whatsoever which screen drivers to choose, so I chose one
at random and got a garbled display. Any hints on what I should use
with a fairly new nVidia card?

I also found Easy-PC, which looks promising although it exceeds what
I wanted to pay by several hundred dollars.

Just as a wild guess you'll probably only get it working with a generic
VGA driver...

They did have a small development tool available to 'simply' write your
own video driver. I don't know anyone that ever did it 'cause Windows
version started popping up soon after...

VGA640.DRV is the generic 16color VGA driver. Copy it to GRAPH.DRV to get it
to work.

See the following page for more modern drivers, as well as how to set it up.

I am using one of his drivers - an 800x600 vesa with excellent results.
