Death of the Frequency Shifter?

Death of the Frequency Shifter?

2002-11-01 by Tentochi

Does anyone have a Frequency Shifter in their rig
right now?

I would love to have one, but the prospect of
getting
one from Tony any time in the near future isn't
looking good.

What other companies are currently making Frequency
Shifters? Has Paul ever talked about doing one?

Present
JH FS-1
D*epfer A-126
Anal*gue Systems RS240
Serge FRS

Past
360 Systems
Bode 6552 (?3500)

?Bode 735
Buchla 185

Modcan is releasing one soon. Audio demo files already on their website...
http://www.modcan.com

Analogue systems has one shipping now...
http://www.analoguesystems.com/

Doepfer has the A-126 Voltage Controlled Frequency Shifter...
http://www.doepfer.de/home_e.htm

I'd wait on the Modcan, but that's just me....

Sadly, after my last communication with Bruce D., it looks like this is
temporarily on hold as well. It might not happen...even though I would like
like to get my hands on one as well.

If you're willing to go with a software or effects box solution, the Alesis
Ineko has one in it. And I believe Creamwares software based modular also
does.

Detailed explanation =
voltage shifter = simple
frequency shifter = incredibly difficult

Ah, the past. About 23 years or so ago I had the pleasure of being a guest
at the home of Harald Bode, in Buffalo, NY. At the time I worked with his
son, Peer Bode, at the Experimental TV Center in Binghamton, NY. Peer and I
were in Buffalo for some reason (maybe to visit Woody and Steina Vasulka,
the video artists) and we paid a visit to Peer's father. As you probably
know, the elder Bode invented a lot of amazing audio equipment, including
the vocoder and the frequency shifters mentioned in the link below. I got
to play around in Mr. Bode's home studio and in particular with a frequency
shifter. I remember hooking up a primitive rhythm box to it and shifting
the heck out of the bongos. I still have a cassette tape of that session
lying around somewhere.
