Can anyone out there figure out what the number one problem is with 
the CD and DVD?

hint it doesn't deal with zeros and ones or bit depth or bit rates. 
it's very simple.

they cause you to go out and re-buy your entire CD / video collection for no
rational reason

 Well, I think DVD videos's shortcoming is turning out to be durability. I 
can't even count how many times I've rented movies and have had them skip, 
freeze up, or not even play at all. This is due to previous 
mis-handling.....scratches!  :(

Ummm, the fact that they're easy to scratch and loose?  ;)

I would guess crappy DACs in the players.
