Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mary Bauermeister

Karlheinz Stockhausen, Mary Bauermeister

for anyone who knows Stockhausen, they might be interested to know
that I brought my tiny MOTM rig with a few other synths to play at
the Bauermeister residence in a strange improv fest... apparently
psychedelia and experiementation in music is still alive.

But, it's odd to be the most concrete/mundane person in a group! I'm
the engineer with the patch cords... surrounded by...

DIRTY HIPPIES!

(heh)

Anyway, that's all.

Usually, it's the other way around for me. Being the most right-
brained (certainly the longest-haired)engineer at my company AND the
most technical in groups of fellow artists makes for some interesting
moments. However, being involved in experimental music ASSURES your
being an outcast!

Party on!

It's more weird because lots of people I know think I'm "out there"
musically, but I don't think so myself.

Amazing thing about this show was the range of sounds I was able to
get out of 2 MOTM modules:
MOTM-120 Sub Octave Mux, MOTM-420 Filter, MOTM-320 vcLFO

Chaos patches were well appreciated, and blending the highpass from
the 420 with my Juno-106's lowpass sounded nice.

At first, I was upset because my mixer ended up being used as a
master mixer for everyone, but then I realized I had 2 mixers right
there in my MOTM rig. "Sweet." For the real estate, this stuff is
amazing. Actually, for anything it's amazing.

Best quote: "So why did you keep plugging things in and unplugging
them?" Next time i'll set up with my back to the audience... anyone
do it that way, or the other way?

(Still excited from the live debut of the teeny tiny MOTM setup)

LH:
You're going to need to give us all a lesson in how to get 6U in 4U of
space. It will help our cabinet realestate. <snicker>

There is only one answer: "Because I can."

I would like to nominate this answer as "Answer of the month (AOTM)".
Keep it up, Larry!

I always play with my back to the audience when my
modular is along. Lots of blinking lights, knob
twiddling and patching going on. I hate all of those
boring laptop guys out there; it doesn't make any
difference what direction they are facing.

Electro-acoustic stuff is also a big crowd pleaser
visually (and hopefully acoustically too!).

Cheers!
Shemp

P.S. Setting up perpendicular to the audience or at
an angle also works. This is sometimes necessary when
I am not the only modular performer on stage.
