I must confess I am a bit disappointed with the responses to this. I
thought many of the people who are into modular synthesis would have
a
parallel interest in home recording as well. It seems to me that a
range of quality studio tools would at the very least enable users to
get a better recording of their modular down onto tape or disc.

I for one have gotten rid of my outboard mixers and use an 8 channel
audio card direct into my computer. Aside from maybe a Lexicon or
something, everything else will be internal.

Instead people seem to think I am suggesting this as an alternative
to future synth module development, or even as an alternative to
already slated modules that are a done deal as far as their actual
appearance is concerned. I don't recall suggesting or even implying
either of thise things.

Heh. If some of us seem horrified by thoughts of Paul branching out
into other things, it may be because we have been waiting for a
sequencer for 3 years, for the MOTM-130 for a year, for an envelope
follower for two years...

Paul's bandwidth is already too narrow for my liking!

You might want to take a look at
http://www.seventhcirclestudios.com/N72/N72.htm. This is a kit for a
clone of the Neve 1272 mic preamp. I heard about it through the
tapeop.com message board. The guy who sells the kit was pretty
disappointed at the initial sales of the kit, so I'm not sure if
they're still available, but he has talked recently about some other
kits, including an optical compressor. I'm hoping to build a couple
of N72's when cash flow permits.

The only solution is cloning.

Paul Alpha, Synth development

Paul Beta, business managment, parts ordering, etc.

Paul Gamma, Audio Gear development

Paul Omega, family obligations!

or not...

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Ah, the perfect solution!!!

In the ideal world, I would have 1200 *active* customers ordering 8,000 modules a year. I could
have a nice 12,000sq ft building, about 7 full-time employees, blah blah blah.

Reality: I have about *80* active users, ordering about 1100 modules/year. The module "mix" is
currently 95% NEW ones (for example, this YEAR I have sold 11 MOTM-120s). So, it's a "zero-sum
game": I have to design new modules, which cause a backlog. Then I have to wait to design new
ones as the backlog S L O W L Y reduces. People really liked the MicroModules: but they are cheap
so the revenue number is less (per module). The 500 won't help: more $$$ with fewer sales. New
users that order the average 11 modules/system are how the business 'grows'. But in the current
economy, that's getting tough.

Good thing this is just a hobby.

Yeah, but think of all the good karma you're building up!
