MP3 Problems

MP3 Problems

1999-09-17 by Tkacs, Ken

I have a question regarding MP3 files.

When I try to open the one on the SynthTech "news" page, and also MP3s sent
out from people on this chat area, I get "unrecognized format" errors.

I use MP3s all day--I do lots of multimedia work. I've never had a problem
with them until now, and it's the same problem with all of the files relted
to MOTM stuff.

Are all you folks using Macintoshes or something? Just trying to figure out
where the incompatibility is. I've tried opening them with WinAmp, G2,
Premier... Yet all of my othe MP3s play fine.

Not that this is what you wanted to hear, but they work fine for me... I
just pulled both of the MP3's from the NEWS page (Dave Fulton's piece and
the 410 demo) and they opened right up in WinAMP under Windows NT.

They're both done as MPEG 1.0 Layer 3, at 128kbs and 44.1khz.

Maybe the problem is with the MIME encoding? What happens if you
SHIFT_CLICK to force the files down raw, and then load 'em up? Are they
possibly coming down as ASCII encoded, and thus need to be uncooked?

Just as a test to see if it's Paul's hosting service, can you use any of
the files from here?

These give me no problems. I just pulled two down and they both work fine.

This is very odd.

Hmmmm....

My only guess is the MIME encoding sent from the server...

I know that my host is sending "audio/x-mpeg", I can drop a sniffer on my
line in a minute and see what's being sent.

*** one minute later...

Nope, I'm wrong, the site is sending an audio/x-mpeg tag... Hmmm....

Did you have a chance to try a SHIFT_CLICK and then load the file once it
comes down?

Very strange...

Nope. I get: "The file cannot be played. The file may be corrupt, or not in
the correct format."

Winamp plays it fine for me.

Well, I thought that as well, but he can get to other MP3's that are
encoded the same way from other sites. Your hosting service is sending the
right MIME type, and the file is coming down the right size so it's not an
ASCII encoding thing.

All very weird...

I think he has a browser issue.

I have a CD rom burner now. I can copy them directly if anybody need them.

Whoops-let me ask a functional question: if I hit "reply" to an Email that
comes in off list, does it go straight to that person, or back to the main
list? Microsoft Outlook _appears_ to be addressing it back to the list, but
I get the feeling that's not happening...?

I apologize if these replies aren't being properly directed.

I think Ken was aiming for the list with this question.

He and I have been trying to figure out what's up with the
MP3's on Paul's
news page but to no avail...

It depends on the mail client. Eudora, for example, can go either way based
on a config option.

The one I forwarded back to the list had come straight to me, but that was
because I had stopped including the list in that conversation we had going.

This one that you just did went back to the list.
