500 series/update

500 series/update

2002-06-17 by Paul Schreiber

I will give some hints after the 4th of July weekend. I *really* need to reduce the backlog
before I get everyone all excited about new modules. In general terms:

a) the modules will be EXPENSIVE, say on the order of the MOTM-300 *or more*
b) they are not for everyone. In fact, I'm not entirely sure they are musically useful. It is not
my place to say. I''m sure there will be many people who will look at the descriptions, the
panels, the MP3s and the price and think I've gone off the deep end. You asked for weird, I'm
gonna give you WEIRD. On the other hand, I expect to get "you are calling THIS weird??!?" as
well.
c) the first 2 modules are the "not so weird" ones: the VC pulse divider and the WaveWarper. In
fact, if you go to www.synthtech.com/demo I think there is a long (like 6MB) slowly evolving
demo. The demo is just tweaking the knobs on the panel.

On the 'normal' side of things: last week I got *nothing* accomplished MOTM-wise, as it's
"justify your job" time (end of fiscal year). This week will let up some, then the following week
is HELL WEEK where everyone rushes to get all the work turned in (it's no different than finals
week at college). Everyone is then exhaused (18-20hr days not uncommon) and take 3 weeks off.

I am trying to get 100 (!!?!) kits shipped out by July 1st. On Sat, 17 of you got The Happy
Email. Many more will get such an email over the next 2 weeks.

I also plan to off-load some work to get caught up. This is both in the kitting and assembly side
of things. I suppose it is cheaper than hiring people :( But I think I owe it to you, the loyal,
always waiting customers to flush out the backlog before offering a slew of new stuff.

BE AWARE that I an slowing running out of 100K log pots. I have ordered 1000 more BUT delivery is
not until OCTOBER. Yes, OCTOBER. So, I will *very carefully* dole them out on a module-by-module
basis. What this means is that the MOTM-890 uMixer will not go into "full scale" shipping, just
the *subscribers* and then, not ALL of them. I am rather going to use them for *assembled*
420/440 orders. The clever amongst will figure out why :)

OK, back to work! I'm doing a "quick batch" of modules to ship out tomorrow.

When do you estimate you will be out of 100k log pots, Paul? Will it
mean that the supply of most of the modules comes to a full stop?
If yes, the good thing is that it will probably give you extra time
to catch up with backlog and new modules. But you could consider to
temporarely supply kit-modules without 100K log pots (on request?)
and send those later. In that way you would still be payed and give
us motm DIY-ers some kind of relief (though it will be frustrating to
have an almost finished module which you cannot use because of a
missing pot!).

I have 109 left. About 45 are "spoken for" assembled modules as of today. I have about 10ea of
'420, '380, and '440 *kits* already made up with the pots. (not part of the 109 left).

I messed up, I thought I had like 600 left.

Will run out in mid-August. So, about 6-8 WEEKS with those modules not shipping. This happened to
me about 2 1/2 years ago :(
