Stooge Panel for MoogerFoogers?

Stooge Panel for MoogerFoogers?

2002-05-12 by alt-mode

Here's a mildly crazy idea: After seeing pics of an MF-101 (LPF) and MF-102
(RingMod) mounted in a Serge panel, I was wondering if it would be worthwhile to
consider making Stooge panels for these things. They are great VC-able devices but
'ol Bob figured he could sell more as stomp boxes rather than rack mounts. I wonder
how tough it would be to remount these into a MOTM form factor. It might take up 3U
but would be very cool to have a VC'd phaser (MF-103), Analog delay (MF-104) as well
as the LPF and RingMod in MOTM format.

Any ideas or interest?

   Eric

I have the phaser. Nice box BTW. Personally, I think it would be an
abortion to do it. However, I do admit that I picked mine up and said "what
if?"

But, there are problems. without even taking about the mounting issues, I
can tell you that the panel would be a problem to make. You have all those
square holes. Sure, I could get it done (forget asking how many the minimum
would be for each I assume different design. And, our screener does not
like to screen them after the holes are there (don't ask me why). So, as
you can see, there are a lot of good reasons not to attempt that particular
re-package job. But, it "could" be done.

Funny that you should mention this, but I have been given the job to
make the Moogerfoofer ring mod and phaser fit into a Synth.com modular.
The face plates are going to be Scheaffer, but the hardest part is
getting the power supply to work. Yes, you can run it off the +15V rail,
but it hogs the current. 300mA if I remember correctly. And... this is a
big 'and'... the power supply uses two switched capacitor invertors to
create the internal -ve supplies. This little circuit honks 15KHz all
over the place. Now its probably OK, if you have it in its own separate
box and its own power supply, but in a modular system your supply will
be infected.

Now I have spoken to Steve Dunnington at Big Briar and were going to
sort something out so that a standard +/-15V supply can be used. And
before you say 'but thats easy', it isn't because the Moogerfoogers use
that 15KHz signal to drive the audio bypass switching as well as driving
the invertors.... so we can't just rip'em out and put in a header. I'll
keep everyone informed of we get on.
