Newbie question: MIDI to CV options

Newbie question: MIDI to CV options

2002-04-21 by Adam Schabtach

Greetings, all--

Forgive me if this is an FAQ, but I've perused the archives of this list and
haven't been able to find a consensus in answer.

I'm interested in purchasing a MIDI to CV converter to control my MOTM
synth-in-progress. I was planning to put off this purchase until the synth
itself is mostly finished, but now I have discovered that such a converter
is a handy source of known voltage values for calibrating filters and
oscillators. Hence I'm thinking about buying one sooner rather than later.

These seem to be my options:

-Encore Expressionist - generally highly regarded, and Tony sure seemed like
a nice fellow when I met him at NAMM. But apparently it's not currently
available, pending release of the new version sometime later this year, and
Tony by his own recent admission is kind of tied up with other things,
possibly making the release date of the new Expressionist even more hazy...?
And they don't seem to pop up on eBay very often. :-)

-Kenton Pro 2000 - Paul sells 'em so they must be good, right?

-Paia midi2cv8 - yes, I know that mentioning Paia and MOTM in the same
sentence is like mentioning Yugo and Porsche in the same sentence. I'm just
wondering whether anyone has tried one. I realize that I'd have to fabricate
my own MOTM-style panel and possibly add a voltage regulator to get the
right power to it.

-synthesizers.com's module - actually I've mostly ruled this out because I
want more CV outputs than it provides.

Have I overlooked any options? Any comments, suggestions, etc. from owners
or users of any of these modules are most welcome. It is probably worth
mentioning that I am at least as interested in using this device to generate
modulation voltages from MIDI messages as I am in using it for the standard
MIDI-note to CV/gate conversion.

Thanks much,
--Adam

Adam, I am managing to put together a few original Expressionist as time
permits. I have a couple here now ready to go AND I just found a few more
new chassis without any scratches. A couple were scratched just from
improper handling. If you REALLY want one, I can get one together for you.

And the Oakley MIDIDAC2:

And there is a Stooge panel for it too I believe:

There is also the Midwest Analog Products MTS-100:

Kenton discontinued the Pro-4 unfortunately. Perhaps there is a Pro-4000
around the corner???

Note: This is an old page and Paul is is longer selling the Pro-4000, but
you can read about it.

I personally use an Encore Expressionist, but a Kenton would work about as
well for me. Perhaps the Expressionist has a slight edge for your intended
usage.

Frostwave also makes a Midi/CV converter. It is a 4 channel converter than can be switched to expanded mono mode.

A thank-you to the folks who responded to my query about MIDI-CV converters.
I took Tony up on his offer to sell me one of the last few Expressionists. I
just couldn't resist the temptation of all of those CV outputs. :-)
