Headhunting

2002-03-21 by Brousseau, Paul E (Paul)

(Caution-- crossposted!)

Anyone remember Front242's "big hit", _Headhunter_v3.0_ (off the _Front_By_Front_ album, circa 1988)? I've been listening to it a bit recently, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how to make that deepish cello-type sound (kicks in at 26 seconds into the track, and nearly solo'ed at 3:26) (on the MOTM and/or A6, of course!). I suppose it might have been a sample, since it seems to only have a handful of pitches, but given the relative simplicity of the sound, I'm sure it could be synthesized. There's a quality about the sound which my lack of practical synth expireince prevents me from grasping or creating.

Thanks!

i'm pretty convinced it's a sample, possibly through some sort of filter.
it sounds samply, plus the album was made in the heyday of sampler use in
industrial music. to reproduce it, i might take a cello or some other solo
string preset from a k2000 or something and run it through a 420, or
perhaps two in series (hp-lp).

bleep.
out.

I suppose my question should be, then, how do I synthesize a cello sound (i.e., without using a sampler)? It sort of feels like it has a "hollow" sound-- notch filtered? The sound pitches downwards for each note, but I don't even know what sort of waveform to begin with.

Thanks again!

Anyone remember Front242's "big hit", _Headhunter_v3.0...

hello all,
ah the good old days, bouncing up and down on cobbled (!!!) dancefloors, and
that was what 15 years ago..?
yikes
i seem to remember the Belgian & Dutch contingients were pretty big on
digital synths, maybe a Kawai or something like that - it does so happen
though that the bowed bass sound i posted a PDF for a year or so ago would
do the trick after some alteration to the envelope and a the addition of a
little pink (maybe white) noise
i'll email it over to paul but it's 100 odd K so i won't put it on to the
list just yet
i think it's on the web somewhere, i just can't remember where
maybe try www.pasc.syol.com/testpatch.pdf
or www.pasc.syol.com/images/testpatch.pdf
