Fixed Filter Bank?

Fixed Filter Bank?

2002-03-01 by sucrosemusic

Well, having just read up on fixed filter banks (they can't possibly
be what they sound like, can they?) I discovered that they were,
disappointingly, basically just graphic EQs.

Wouldn't a parametric EQ be better? But, most importantly, wouldn't
we be better off usinc EQs made by the big companies? There's
practically a whole EQ industry (check out manley labs's
expensive "Tube EQ" line)

Is a fixed filter bank really that exciting? I still vote for
Parametric EQ, possibly voltage controlled. ... Hmm, sounds a bit
like an MOTM-410 on steroids.

No, they aren't just EQs. The effect is more dramatic, because
a) you can completely attenuate certain bands with *steep*
    filter slopes, and
b) certain filter banks will add a nice coloration to the sound
even with all potentiometers at maximum.

I've built a modern version of the Moog 907 filter bank some
weeks ago - one more step to get the "trademark Moog Modular"
sound. I'll make some demos when I find the time.

That would be great. JH. What would be super if you could do an A/B demo -
one with the fixed filter to a setting of your liking and one without. I am
one of those confused about exactly how the FFB is better than an EQ
sonically. A demo that has with and without might be very enlightening for
those like me still in the dark. :)
