New demos on the '310 and '320 pages.

Note that these demos aren't the only ones for these modules. I plan to add/swap/rotate them to
keep things interesting. As a whole, these newer demos show off the modules better than the ones
from 2yrs ago. Thanks again.

800 EG with banana plugs question

2002-03-01 by Les Mizzell

Evening,

Hopefully you won't hate this Paul, but....

On the MOTM 800 EG - assuming you're using banana plugs on all in/out jacks,
what would the correct wiring to the plugs be for the unit to properly
function...

It's pretty straight forward until you get to the Trigger Mod, which is
switched on the 1/4 jack. Since my keyboard has both trigger and gate, so is
it even needed at this point?

So, seems it would be:

1. J2 to Trigger in
2. J1 White to Gate in
3. J4 to minus out
4. J3 to plus out

OK, what do I do with the Trigger Mod and the orange (switched) J1 wire?

Thanks....

Boy, just mention banana plugs and suddenly nobody will talk to you anymore!

> It's pretty straight forward until you get to the Trigger Mod,

I'm thinking at this point of adding two switches to the panel, and then
attaching the wires, through the switches and to the appropriate jack on the
panel. Then I can just switch them on or off as needed, depending on what
I'm using as a trigger at any point...

Anybody got thoughts on this?

Surely I'm not the only person in the world that's putting banana plugs on a
MOTM.

Or am I?

I'm not using any banana jacks, and if I did I would use the 940. I
personally prefer 1/4"...

Surely you aren't!

I must've been the first to do this as I was one of the first customers. Since I had no idea where MOTM was going to go when the first modules shipped, I decided I would plan on a "smallish" MOTM to compliment my small Serge (and home-brew) stuff.

At first, this worked very well. But soon too many modules used normalling. I seem to recall the 800 as a module that I decided to wire up so that I always had to provide both a gate and trigger to (since I could just use a small patch cord between the gate and trigger inputs when I was only using a gate signal).

However, after several more modules, I came to my senses. I'd had other "problems" with the normallized inputs on a few modules (I remember having to add something like a 1M resistor to ground on the control inputs of the 700, and I had to call Paul when I couldn't get my 410 LFO to go below 10 Hz with no input -- I didn't even see the normalled ground on the schematic until after making a fool out of myself). I finally was assimilated to the inevitability of 1/4" world domination.

Like others, I'd suggest you leave the MOTM 1/4" and go the route of the patch panel, and custom cables (1/4" on one end and banana on the other). You can also fit a banana jack into a 1/4" plug and build a custom adapter (watch out for the sheild/strain relief part of the jack). This will save you a lot of trouble later as you MOTM system grows.

What are you interfacing with?

If you really want to add bananas to the 800, I think I can look up my old stuff and let you know what I had done and what it did (and maybe didn't do).

Good luck!

My main system is Modcan.

Please!

I do understand the problems with converting normalled connections over to
bananas, and am sure I will make many mistakes along the way. It's been
awhile since I've built any kits (think PAIA when they first started...damn
am I getting old!)

I gave serious thought to using the Converter panel, but as mentioned
before, I'd almost need 1 panel for each 2 modules I want to interface.

If I get to a point where I *have* to build special cables or use the patch
panel, I will, but I feel that restricts flow when patching and will go to
great lengths to avoid that.

Thanks for you offer to help. Looking forward to seeing what you did to your
800s.

I'm slowly working on a section of my website for the trials and
tribulations of assembling a modular. I'll be adding the mods that I'm
having to make to panels as I go along as well. The main MOTM modules
currently being considered are 4 800s. While Modcan has a GREAT VC ENV, but
I don't need a $200 VC ENV for everything! So I'm filling out some there.
Will probably add 2 quad LFOs as well shortly. Will mod those with CV inputs
for each LFO instead of the normalled connections.

Can't wait to see the configuration of the "Envelope Nest" 500 module!

Anybody done 410 Triple Res Filter Mods

2002-03-04 by Les Mizzell

Afternoon,

Getting ready to order a 410 Triple Res Filter...

Has anybody done mods to allow:

A. Separate VC Control of each LFO?

B. Separate outputs for each LFO?

C. Additional VC input for each filter to allow control from an external
source like an EG or S/H?

Note: I didn't mention banana jacks even ONCE!
