midiDAC2 parts q's (newbie alert)

2002-02-10 by Eric Frampton

OK, I think I've gotten in over my head here.

I wanna build a midiDAC2. I've got a FP from Chez Stooge, I'm about to order
the PCB, PIC, and pots from Tony, I've talked to Larry about some parts
(thanx again Larry), and I've referenced the HotRodMOTM site which covers
some of the other items, but I'm still coming up with more overwhelming
choices than answers. Now I'm trying to figure out which...

22-turn trims
10MHz crystal
leaded ferrite beads

...to order. So many parts, so little clue. Any Mouser or Allied part #'s
would be much appreciated.

Also is it safe to assume that the various capacitor types (with different
values, of course) listed on the HotRod site as MOTM would would be suitable
for a project like this as well?

Thanks, y'all.
Eric

I've just learned that there is an Oakley list. Sorry for the slightly OT
waste of bandwidth. I'll go annoy those folks some.

I bought some beads from Mouser:

#623-2743002112. $.12 ea

I don't have part numbers for the other items, but Mouser is likely
to have them.

Eric,

I would offer a suggestion...

Buy a Stooge Inc. 4-pot wide long-version PCB mounting bracket, then buy
some nice Spectrol (or Bourns) linear pots from mouser.com. That way you
have a nice solid mounting solution and freedom of pot choice - as it were.

Weller Soldering Iron Questions

2002-02-11 by VCOVCAVCF

How long do the tips last for the basic model Weller?
How do you know when a tip is bad?

What type of tip are most people put there using?

thanx
jeph

Is the magnet strength decline a function of just (clock) time or of how
long (time) the unit is used?

Certainly, the heat is a factor because the heat is reaching the Curie Point of the magnet. It's
not a magnet anymore, then :)

This trips the thermostat and it stops heating.

I solder an average of 3hr/day. I replace mine every 8 months or so.

Where I used to work we left the WTCP's on about 20 hours a day. The tips
lasted 6-8 months so we never had a chance for the magnets to wear out!
Which brings up the question, does the magnet weaken from the heat? And if
so, what if you only use it a couple hours a week?

I just replaced the tip in my personal station after 17 years (hasn't been
turned on much). You can easily tell when they're going bad because the
plating eats all the way through somewhere and then the whole tip goes in a
couple of hours (if you're lucky).
