OT: Headphone Recommendations

2001-12-16 by Dave Hylander

Hi all,
I'm thinking about replacing my old Sennheiser HD540 phones with something
new. Anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks,
dave

Dave,

I like the AKG K270 Reasonably priced and have an even response (at
least to my aging ears). You can see them here:

Sony MDR-V6 or MDR-7506 (basically the same thing). Sweetwater has good
deals.

In my opinion these are the best sounding phones in the $100 price range.

Actually the question about headphones also needs to be accompanied with
whether you plan to use them for mixing. If so then you may want headphones
with a flat response that are made for mixing. I have a pair of
Audio-Technica phones for that, model ATH-M40fs. I believe AKG also has
something similar.

If just for listening the I second the the Sony MDR-7506. They are very
popular, very comfortable and sound great. They are the professional version
of the commercial version, the MDR-V6 which is no longer available. What
that means is Sony changed the model number and color of the label on the
MDR-7506 compared to the MDR-V6 so they could charge considerably more for
them. The MDR-V6 used to sell for as low as $70, the MDR-7506 sell for $100
just about everywhere.

One of the studio standard cans are the Sony MDR-7506. About $100 at Guitar
Center. I have two pair and love 'em. They're not flat, by any means, but
they're very non-ear-fatiguing over long periods of time. And they fold up
into this cool carrying pouch. Sealed design.

For a flatter, more bomb-proof, cheaper pair, the Fostex T-40's are another
common studio staple. Live instrumentalists and singers tend to like the
Fostex's better (flat response), I like the Sonys for working, tho'.

hello,
for monitoring / mixing on the quiet: AKG K240DF
i have a pair they've a good response, 1/8" jack with a screw in 1/4"
adaptor, very comfortable and not fatigueing to the ear - a semi enclosed
design

for foldback / live monitoring: Beyer DT100s everytime
modular construction, well built, clamp to your head like some big sort of
clamp - fully enclosed

cheers
