Abusing a VCA

Abusing a VCA

2001-11-16 by sucrosemusic@yahoo.com

Ok, so here's the question:

Is a VCA usable for CV as well as audio? I sort of assumed it worked
for CV... here's where it gets weird

If a VCA can be used for CV, then doesn't that mean I can use it for,
well, just about anything? Like I could run a small electric lamp
through the VCA, and the signal would adjust the brightness? Or
adjust the speed of a fan?

Hmm. If that's the case, what kind of power would be safe to run
through it? =]

It will work for DC, but only up to say 4ma. Do not use it to adjust your toaster over or model
railroad speed.

I think toasters and model trains use AC, but that's still very good
advice. Besides, there is already a MIDI spec for toasters.

Afaik, you can't run DC through VCA input of a 110 due to the blocking cap,
but you can use the X input with the switch set to DC.

Is the upcoming dual pan/fade VCA (MOTM-130??) AC or DC coupled??
